Cardinals Take 4-2 Loss at Kentucky
April 07, 2026 | Baseball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team lost 4-2 on Tuesday night at Kentucky in the first of two Battle of the Bluegrass games this spring.
Louisville (19-14) managed just two base hits on the night but drew 10 walks and three HBPs. However, the Cardinals left 12 runners on base in the loss.
The Cardinals got on the board first on Tuesday, doing so without the benefit of a hit. Griffin Crain was hit by a pitch to start the night and Zion Rose followed with a walk. A groundout moved both up 90 feet and Bayram Hot drove in the game's first run with another groundout.
Jake Schweitzer was excellent for the Cards in his second start of the season. The right-hander worked out of a jam in the first before retiring the side in order in the second and third. The 3.0 innings matched his season high, while his three strikeouts were a season best.
Kentucky (24-8) tied the game up in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. However, TJ Schlageter was able to strand a pair and limit the damage to just one.
The Wildcats would move in front behind three runs in the sixth though.
Louisville threatened in the seventh, loading up the bases with two outs on a single and two walks. However, a flyout to deep center fizzled out the scoring chance.
The Cardinals got two more runners into scoring position with two outs in the eighth, but were again unable to bring them home.
Louisville had one last effort at the plate in the ninth. Crain and Rose reached to start the inning and Tague Davis recorded a backside single to cut the deficit to two. From there though, a double play and groundout ended the contest.
Louisville returns home this weekend to host Stanford for three games. The series gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
