Louisville went undefeated over its six-game homestand
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville women's soccer team (7-1-0) closed out the homestand with another shutout as it defeated Dayton (2-3-2) 2-0 Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals finished its six-game homestand undefeated as they won all six games and did so in impressive fashion. Louisville outscored its opponents 36-2 over the homestand and collected a clean sheet in five of the six games.
Coming off her first career hat trick and the first Louisville hat trick since 2018, sophomore forward Amelia Swinarski found the scoresheet again on Sunday. She scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the team-lead. Swinarski tallied a point in each of the six games during the homestand. Liza Suydam had one of the assists on Swinarski's goal and she has also recorded an assist in each of the last six games. Emerson Jennings was the other goal scorer for the Cards, as she broke the deadlock in the first half.
The Cardinals started the match out on the front foot and looked to take the lead in the 18th minute. Swinarski had a quality attempt on goal but it was saved away by the Flyers keeper. Just a few minutes later, Swinarski and AG Gibson had back-to-back shots but they were also saved by the Flyers keeper.
Coming off a corner kick in the 22nd minute, Suydam had a shot that was saved but Jennings put the rebound into the back of the net. Unfortunately the flag was up as Jennings was offside and the goal was disallowed.
Jennings did not let it deter her as she broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Erynn Floyd started the play with the pass to Karsyn Cherry and she sent the ball upfield to a streaking Jennings. She got by the Dayton defense and was 1-v-1 with the Flyers keeper. She got her shot past the keeper and under the bar for the first goal of the match. It was her second goal of the season and put the Cards up 1-0.
Louisville took that lead into halftime after a few key saves from Floyd kept the Cardinals in front. The Cardinals had an 11-3 edge on shots but Dayton had a slight advantage in saves at 4-3 in the first half.
Early in the second half, the Cardinals had a few opportunities to extend the lead but the Flyers keeper kept the Cards lead at just 1-0.
In the 74th minute, the Cardinals broke through for the second goal of the match. Grace Maddox's throw-in made it all the way to the box where it was deflected by Suydam to Swinarski. Her right-footed volley snuck inside the right post for the goal and extended the Louisville lead to 2-0.
Louisville did not allow a shot the rest of the game as it secured the sixth-straight win and the fourth-straight clean sheet.
The Cardinals hit the road to open ACC play next week. Louisville heads down to Tallahassee for a matchup against the sixth-ranked Florida State Seminoles on Thursday, September 11. The Cardinals and Seminoles are set to square off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
