Cards advance to second round of NCAA Tournament for fourth time in program history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 20 Louisville women's soccer team (13-4-3) survived a thriller over Kentucky (12-4-5) and advanced on penalty kicks, 1-1 (5-4 PK's), Saturday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals scored an equalizer from Amelia Swinarski in the 79th minute to push it to extra time and then penalty kicks, where Mackenzie Geigle was the hero to advance the Cards to the second round.
It was a very physical first half as both teams had a number of fouls over the opening 45 minutes.
Kentucky had the best chance of both teams in the 24th minute. Alexis Tylenda had the first shot that deflected off the crossbar and back into play. Thalia Morisi got to the loose ball and got a shot on frame but it was headed away by Karsyn Cherry and ended the threat.
In the second half, Kentucky got on the scoresheet in the 47th minute. Morisi headed in a corner kick from Grace Hoytink and the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats held the lead until the 79th minute when the Cardinals were able to punch through with the equalizer. Liza Suydam played a ball up to Swinarski who weaved through a couple Kentucky defenders. She fired a shot inside the right post and past the keeper for the game's tying goal. It was her 10th of the season and the Cards tied it at 1-1.
The score would stay the same all the way through both extra periods and penalty kicks was needed to decide the winner.
Cherry and Swinarski made their attempts and Fina Davy scored in the final round to advance to sudden death penalties. Both teams saved the first attempts and then Grace Maddox scored to advance to the third round of sudden death. Floyd made her second save of the sudden death period and Geigle was able to slot home the game-winning penalty kick.
It was Louisville's first win in penalties since October 25, 2013, against Cincinnati in the regular season finale. The win improved Louisville to 4-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
Up next for the Cardinals is the No. 3 seed Kansas Jayhawks in the second round down in Durham, N.C. The Cardinals and Jayhawks will square off on Thursday, November 20th at 4pm ET and it will be streamed on ESPN+.
