LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The No. 6 seed and 20th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team (13-4-3) is heading south to Durham, North Carolina for the second round of the NCAA Tournament this week. Against the Wildcats this past Saturday, Louisville trailed 1-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation. Swinarski scored her team-best 10th goal of the season while Suydam recorded her 10th assist of the year, tying the team lead. The score remained level after 110 minutes and penalties were needed to decide who advances.
Karsyn Cherry and Swinarski both made their kicks and Fina Davy converted to extend the match into sudden death penalties. After both keepers made a save in round six, Grace Maddox converted in round seven to keep the match going. Erynn Floyd made her second save of the extra round and Mackenzie Geigle put it home to move the Cardinals into the second round.
Kansas enters Thursday's match with a 15-5-3 overall record and were 6-4-1 in Big 12 play. The Jayhawks earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and defeated California Baptist in the first round this past weekend. The Jayhawks advanced to the Big 12 Championship match but fell to BYU, 1-0. Kansas played one other ACC team this season, No. 2 Florida State, and they both played to a 1-1 draw back in August. This is the first meeting all-time between the two schools.
