Amelia Swinarski scored the equalizer in the 86th minute
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville women's soccer team (11-3-2, 4-2-2 ACC) used a late goal to earn a 1-1 draw against No. 3 Virginia (10-1-3, 4-1-2 ACC) Saturday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. It is the second-straight draw against a ranked opponent as the Cardinals had a 1-1 draw against No. 13 Wake Forest last week. Louisville remains unbeaten at home this season with one home game left in the regular season.
The team's leading goal scorer Amelia Swinarski tallied the equalizer in the 86th minute for the Cardinals. It was her eighth goal of the season and earned a point for the Cardinals for the sixth time in their eight ACC games this season. Erynn Floyd made two saves on the night as the Cardinals limited the Cavaliers to just one goal on the night.
It was a scoreless first half at Lynn Stadium as both defenses limited chances for the opposing teams. The best chance of the half came from the Cavaliers in the 21st minute when Maggie Cagle got a shot toward goal but it deflected off the top bar and was cleared out of the box by the Cardinals.
In the second half, Virginia was the team to strike first in the 48th minute. It was Cagle who had a pass played back to her at the top of the box. She sent another shot on goal and it was deflected off a Louisville defender and found the back of the net. It was the first goal the Cardinals had allowed at home since the second half against Wright State on August 24, a span of over eight games.
Louisville upped the pressure offensively after falling behind and had a few chances to score the equalizer. Lizzie Sexton had a low cross into the box where Mackenzie Geigle was streaking towards the goal. Geigle was just a tad late to the ball and it went through the box and away from danger. Liza Suydam had a cut back and took a shot towards goal in the 78th minute but it was saved by the Cavaliers keeper.
In the 86th minute, the Cardinals finally broke through. Brooklyn Lee crossed it towards the far post where Swinarski won a battle for the ball with a Virginia defender. Swinarski spun out to her right and fired a left-footed shot past the keeper for the goal. It was the last real chance for either team as the game ended in the 1-1 draw.
The Cardinals will head back on the road for their final road game of the regular season next week. Louisville travels to Raleigh to take on NC State on Thursday, October 23. The Cardinals and Wolfpack will square off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
