The four-year Louisville standout will begin her professional career in the NWSL
LOS ANGELES — University of Louisville senior defender Karsyn Cherry has signed a professional contract with Angel City FC, the team announced Wednesday afternoon. Cherry played four seasons for the Cardinals and will begin her professional career this spring in the NWSL.
"Watching Karsyn develop into the player she is now has been incredible and I truly believe she has another level that Angel City will be able to help her reach," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Karsyn is an outstanding soccer player but more importantly she is an amazing human. I am thrilled to watch her flourish at the professional level and under the guidance of the Angel City staff!"
Cherry recently finished her collegiate career this fall after spending four years with the Cardinals. She played in 69 games over her Louisville career and started in 68 of those contests. She ended her career with 12 goals, five assists and 29 points in 5,559 minutes played.
In her final season with the Cardinals, she was named a team captain and helped Louisville have its best season since 2019. Cherry led the Cardinals to a 13-5-3 overall record, 6-2-2 in ACC play and they advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Louisville finished the season 10-0-2 at home, the first time in program history they finished the season unbeaten at home. She was named a Second Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. She is the first Louisville player to earn All-American honors since 2020.
Cherry played center back for a Louisville defense that recorded 12 shutouts on the season. Nine of the 12 shutouts came at home as the Cardinals allowed just four goals at home all season over the 12 games. Cherry also stepped up offensively in the NCAA tournament as she converted a penalty to help the Cardinals advance in PK's over Kentucky in the first round and tallied an assist in the second round against No. 3 seed Kansas.
