
Cardinals Are 12th After Two Events at NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. -- After one night of racing at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Louisville is tied for 12th after two relay events.

Florida has taken an early lead with 72 points followed by Virginia (70), Tennessee (62), Stanford (54), Texas (50), California (48), Indiana (36), Southern California (36), Ohio State (36), Michigan (32), Georgia (26), Wisconsin (20), Louisville (20), Duke (18), North Carolina (14) rounds out the top 15 schools.

In the 200 Medley Relay. Louisville's Karoline Bennett led off the backstroke leg with a split of 24.58. Ella Welch swam the breaststroke leg in 26.90 before handing the race over to flyer Christiana Regenauer, who put up a 22.81. Gabi Albiero swam the freestyle anchor leg in21.16 to combine for a 1:35.45 and a third-place finish in heat 2. The event was won by Virginia's 1:31.58 for the Cavaliers' Virginia's ninth-straight relay win at the NCAA Championships, a streak which dates back to 2022.

In the 800 Free Relay, the Cards were led off by Paige Hetrick's split of 1:43.68. Next in the water was Summer Cardwell, who split 1:45.14 with Fernanda Celidonio handling the third leg in 1:44.01. Tristen Ulett anchored with a time of 1:44.82 for the 6:57.65 as the Cards trimmed 2.66 seconds off their entry time to finish 13th overall. The event was won by Florida, with the Gators going 6:48.59, to break the Virginia streak.

The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow morning for prelims with the 500 free, the 200 IM, the 50 free
and 1-meter diving.

Gabi Albiero, Karoline Barrett, Summer Cardwell, Julia Dennisk, Fernanda Celidonio, Kim Herkle, Paige Hetrick, Lucy Mehraban, Christiana Regenauer, Rye Ulett, Tristen Ulett, Cecilia Viberg and Ella Welch advanced to the national championships based on their season-best times in 21 events. UofL divers Else Praasterink and Lindsay Gizzi joined the postseason competition after the NCAA Zone Qualifying to be held next week  and hosted by the Cardinals.
