
Cardinals Make Podium Twice on Day 4 of ACC Championships

Praasterink wins silver on platform
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team completed Day 4 of competition with the women in third  and the men in fourth at the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships Friday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Friday evening was highlighted by Else Praasterink, who won silver in platform and the women's 400 medley team who grabbed bronze. Â

The Cardinal men have amassed 664 points, and trail NC State (1063.5), Notre Dame (746.5) and Virginia Tech is third with 610.5. Florida State (490) is fifth, Virginia (534.5) North Carolina (529), , Pitt (438), Georgia Tech (392), Duke (198) and Miami (94).

The Cardinal women have scored 841 points and  trail only Virginia (1178.5) and NC State (869). North Carolina is fourth (627.5) followed by Duke (621.5), Florida State (435), Virgina Tech (429.5), Georgia Tech (392), Notre Dame (366), Pitt (332) and Miami (299).

In the first event of the evening, Tristen Ulett was second in the B-final of the 200-butterfly, turning in a 1:57.26, shaving .73 off her prelim time. In the C-final, Summer Cardwell was into the wall fourth with a time of 1:59.52 and Madison Hall was fifth, clocking in at 2:00.12. Alex Walsh of Virginia won gold as the only woman under 1:50 with a 1:49.16 to set a meet, conference, NCAA and American Record.

In the men's 200 butterfly, the Cardinals had half the lanes in the B-final led by Aidan Paro's third place time of 1:44.21. Tommy Bried was fourth in 1:44.49 followed by Mateo Miceli's fifth place time of 1:44.81. Denis Loktev wrapped up the race for the Cards with a sixth place, going 1:45.08. Gustavo Saldo left the C-final field in his rearview, touching in 1:42.86, almost two seconds ahead of the field.

The Cards had one backstroker advance to the final as Paige Hetrick finished third in the B-final with a time of 52.47, shaving .10 off her preliminary time. Katherine Berkoff of NC State won gold with a 48.70, setting a new meet record.

In the men's 100 backstroke, Dalton Lowe touched seventh with a time of 45.68 in a tightly contested final.   In the C-final Charlie Crush was second in the heat with a 46.49. Kacper Stokowski of NC State won with a time of 44.36, the only contestant sub-45.

Ella Welch finished eighth in the B-final with a time of 1:01.14. Â In the C-final, Cecilia Viberg checked in at 1:01.81 to touch fourth. The event was won by Jasmine Nocentini who went 57.01, the only swimmer sub-58 seconds to set a pool record.

Denis Petrashov was fourth in the A-final of the 100 breaststroke, turning in a 51.10. In the B-final, Grant Gooding put up a 52.71 to touch second and teammate Luke Shourds was eighth, going 53.13. In the C-final, Aidan Kreiley touched fourth with a time of 53.80. Virginia's Noah Nichols repeated his title from a year ago with a 50.89 for the gold medal.

Else Praasterink led the platform diving for four rounds and was atop the leaderboard until the very last diver when Bayleigh Cranford edged her by .60 of a point. Praasterink posted a 313.20 to Crandford's 313.80.

In the 400 medley relay, the Cardinals snagged a bronze medal.  Paige Hetrick led off the backstroke leg with a split of 52.49. Next in the water was Ella Welch, who posted the breaststroke leg of 1:00.54. Gabi Albiero swam the fly leg in 50. 37 and handed off in fourth place. Christiana Regenauer put up a 46.88 in the freestyle leg to stop the clock at 3:30.28. Virginia won gold with a time of 3:22.49.

In the men's 400 medley relay, Jackson Millard (46.74), Denis Petrashov (50.26), Dalton Lowe (44.53) and Murilo Sartori (42.30) combined to put up a fifth place time of 3:03.83, shaving four seconds off their entry time. The event was won by NC State's 3:02.20.
