LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team took a tough 3-2 loss against No. 12 Clemson on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (5-4-3, 0-3-3 ACC) held a 2-0 lead midway through the second half before giving up three goals late in the contest.
The Cardinals took advantage of an early set piece to start the scoring on Friday night. Following a Clemson foul, a free kick was sent into the box targeting Josh Jones. After a look at VAR, it was determined that Jones was fouled, and the Cards were awarded a penalty kick that Gage Guerra converted to give Louisville the edge 19 minutes in.
Clemson (7-2-2, 4-2-0) outshot the Cardinals 6-2 over the first 45 minutes, but AJ Piela and the Louisville backline kept the Tigers off the scoreboard heading into halftime.
Louisville struck again just six minutes into the second half. JP Jordan set Ethan Subachan free crossing midfield and Subachan went the distance and slotted it home to double the advantage.
The match remained 2-0 in Louisville's favor across the 70-minute mark before the Tigers finally broke through.
Clemson cashed in its first goal on a header right in front of the net in the 72nd minute, before tying the match up four minutes later.
The Tigers then gained the lead for the first time with a tally in the 79th minute, completing a sequence of three goals in just under seven minutes of match time.
The Cardinals worked to find the tying goal over the final 11 minutes but were unable to level the match.
Clemson held a 15-7 advantage in shots on the night. Piela finished with six saves, his second-highest output of the season.
Louisville will host Evansville in its next match on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
