Cards Draw Evansville Behind Late Goal
October 16, 2024 | Men's Soccer
Gage Guerra scored in the 89th minute to secure the 2-2 draw.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team tallied an 89th minute goal to secure a 2-2 draw against Evansville on Wednesday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Trailing 2-1 in the closing minutes, a VAR review resulted in a handball call inside the box against Evansville.
Gage Guerra then stepped to the penalty spot and beat the keeper in the upper left corner to level the match at two and ultimately get the draw for the Cardinals.
The goal was the team-leading seventh of the year for Guerra, who has now scored in each of his last four matches played and five times over that stretch.
Louisville (5-4-5) found itself behind at halftime after giving up a goal in the closing seconds of the first half. The Cardinals were outshot 8-2 in the opening 45 minutes and allowed five corners.
UofL flipped the script in the second half though.
Shortly after the break, Elijah Brijbasi tied the match up at one with his first collegiate goal. TJ Kahoalii and Jack Lewis combined to find Brijbasi in the center of the box and the sophomore put it home.
Evansville (6-5-2) grabbed the lead back in the 63rd minute, however. A Louisville turnover deep in the defensive third gave the Aces a clean look and ultimately their second goal.
The Cardinals spent the final 27 minutes searching for the equalizer. Leon Kondic and Chase Vazquez each had dangerous opportunities with less than 10 minutes remaining, but both shots were off target before Louisville finally cashed in its chance in the 89th minute.
The match ended with both teams at 13 shots after the Cardinals held an 11-5 advantage in the second half.
Louisville will have the weekend off before taking on Milwaukee next Tuesday in its final non-conference match of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
