Cardinals Are Fourth After Day 3 at NCAA Championships

Praasterink is Louisville's first diving All-American
Knoxville, Tenn. -- After three days of racing at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, the University of Louisville women stand in fourth place. The Cardinals earned four All-American honors as well as four honorable mention All-American honors along the way.

Virginia maintained a commanding lead with 374.5 points followed by Texas (272.5) and Stanford (239). Louisville sits in fourth with 191.5 points followed by NC State (190), Ohio State (170), and Florida (146). Â

Gabi Albiero earned All-American honors with a fifth-place finish, turning in a time of 50.15. Albiero tied with Texas' Emma Sticklen. The championship was won in 48.46 by Virginia's Kate Douglass, who was one of three swimmers under 49 seconds as she won her sixth national individual title. In the consolation final, Tristen Ulett touched third with a time of 51.18 and Christiana Regenauer was fifth in 51.26 as honorable mention All-American honor awardees. Â

Paige Hetrick turned in a 1:44.32 in the championship final of the 200 freestyle. The race was won by Stanford's Taylor Ruck, who went 1:42.36.

In the consolation final of the 400 IM, Abby Hay touched second in 4:06.30 after battling Miami of Ohio's Nicole Maier on the final 25 yards of the freestyle. Hay's final dropped 1.16 seconds off her prelim time and earned her honorable mention All-American honors. The championship final was won by Alex Walsh of Virginia, who went 3:57.24.

Diver Else Praasterink became the first UofL diver to win All-American honors when she finished eighth with a score of 313.50 on the 3M springboard. The event was won by UNC's Aranza Vazquez Montano's 385.80.

In the final timed event of the evening, the Cardinals touched second in their heat with a time of 3:28.58, dropping 1.71 seconds off their entry time. The foursome of Abby Hay (52.15), Cecilia Viberg (59.29), Gabi Albiero (49.86) and an anchor of 47.28 from Christiana Regenauer. Virginia continued its relay sweep with another win as the Cavs put up the winning time of 3:22.39.

Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the finals following at 6 p.m. Live coverage of the meet will stream on ESPN+, with live results available online and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
