Cards win opening meet of 2023
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team swept the University of Missouri Friday afternoon in Columbia.
The No. 7-ranked Louisville women's team won 207-93 over the unranked Mizzou squad with the No. 18-ranked Cardinal men beating the No. 22-ranked Tigers 175-125.
The Cardinals won all four relays and 20 individual events. For the women, Gabi Albiero won the 200 fly, the 100 free and the 100 fly as well as being on the winning 200 medley relay squad. Abby Hay won the 200 breast, the 400 IM and was on the 200 medley relay squad as well. Paige Kuwata swept both distance events with Julia Dennis taking the 50 free and was part of the 400 free relay.
On the men's side, Abdelrahman El-Araby won the 50 and 100 free and was on both winning relays. Denis Petrashov swept the breast events and was on the 200 medley relay squad. Ilia Sibirtsev swept the distance events with wins in the 1000 and 500 freestyle and Dalton Lowe picked up wins in the 100 fly as well as both relays.
Lindsay Gizzi won the 1-meter diving with a score of 269.18 for the women and Che Stephens was the top male Cardinal with a second place score of 298.13. Stephens turned around and won the 3M event with a score of 340.05. For the women's 3M, Else Praasterink took second with a score of 288.38 with Gizzi taking third with a mark of 278.40.
The women took the top two slots in the 200-medley relay to start the meet. The A-relay team of Abby Hay, Cecilia Viberg, Christiana Regenauer and Gabi Albiero posted a time of 1:35.94 and the B-relay went 1:37.30. The men put up the winning time of 1:24.23 by the foursome of Charlie Crush (21.96), Denis Petrashov (23.40), Dalton Lowe (19.91) and Abdelrahman El-Araby anchoring in 18.96.
Paige Kuwata and Liberty Williams went 1-2 in the 1000 free for the Cardinals with Kuwata boarding the winning time of 9:49.60. Williams stopped the clock at 9:54.72. For the men, Cardinal Ilia Sibirtsev held off Missouri's Mikolaj Malec down the stretch for the win, getting the win with a time of 9:10.16 barely out-touching Malec's 9:10.25. UofL's Eli Shoyat was third with a time of 9:13.70.
The Cardinals took the top three spots in the 200 freestyle led by Tristen Ulett's 1:45.95. Paige Hetrick was second in 1:46.96 and Fernanda Celidonio was third with a time of 1:48.09. Murilo Sartori's time of 1:34.49 was nicked by Jack Dahlgren's 1:34.37. Denis Loktev picked up third place for the Cards with a 1:35.45.
In the 100 backstroke, Louisville's Rye Ulett was third with a time of 54.21 just ahead of teammate Jordan Durocher's 56.15. Dalton Lowe finished second on the men's side with a time of 47.21 while teammate Charlie Crush was fifth with a time of 47.94.
Louisville's Cecilia Viberg was second in the 100 breast as the Cardinals' top finisher when she posted a 1:01.08. Ella Welch was third for UofL, posting a 1:01.13 and Abby Hay was fourth, going 1:01.34. For the men, Denis Petrashov was into the wall first with a time of 52.76 for another Cardinal victory. UofL's Aidan Kreiley was third (54.32) and Luke Shourds was fifth with a time of 54.51.
In the 200 butterfly, Gabi Albiero left the field in her wake with a time of 1:55.04, five seconds ahead of the field. Madie Hall was second in 2:00.68. For the men, Tommy Bried was second as the top Card with a time of 1:46.13. Teammate Jacob Pishko was fourth with a time of 1:47.44.
Julia Dennis notched a win in the 50 free for the Cardinals with teammate Christiana Regenauer in hot pursuit. Dennis turned in a 22.26 just .02 ahead od Regenauer. Abdelrahman El-Araby won the men's 50 free with a time of 19.34, holding off teammates Michael Eastman, who turned in a 20.00 and Vlad Dubinin who went 20.14.
Gabi Albiero got her second individual win with a 47.96 winning time in the 100 freestyle as the Cards went 1-2-3 in the event with Ella Welch (49.10) picking up second and Julia Dennis touching third (49.70). Abdelrahman El-Araby completed the sprint sweep with the winning time of 42.73. Michael Eastman was second with a time of 43.23.
In the women's 200 back, Rye Ulett won with a 1:55 and her sister, Tristen, was second with a time of 1:57.09. In the men's 200 back, Louisville's Jackson Millard was second with a time of 1:44.83.
Abby Hay won the 200 breaststroke for the Cardinals with a time of 2:12.50 holding off Mizzou's Katrina Brathwaite for the win. Denis Petrashov made it a breaststroke sweep with his decisive win in the 200, posting a 1:55.64, three seconds ahead of the field. Aidan Kreiley was third (1:59.31) and Luke Shourds was fifth (2:01.17).
Freshman Paige Kuwata got her second distance win when she posted the fastest time in the 500 freestyle with a 4:49.30. Liberty Williams was second in 4:50.31. Maddie Luther was fourth in 4:54.17. Ilia Sibirtsev (4:25.00) and Eli Shoyat (4:26.64) and Gustavo Saldo (4:27.96) took the top three spots in the men's 500 freestyle.
Gabi Albiero got her third win for the Cardinals when she turned in a 51.48 in the 100 butterfly with teammate Christiana Regenauer taking second with a time of 52.15. Louisville's Dalton Lowe won the men's 100 fly when he turned in a 46.01 in a tightly contested finish. Charlie Crush was fifth with a time of 47.97.
Abby Hay won the 400 IM with a time of 4:13.85 and Tommy Bried won it for the Cardinal men with a time of 3:50.51.

The A-relay team of Christiana Regenauer (48.45), Ella Welch (48.88), Tristen Ulett (49.34) and Julia Dennis (48.24) combined for the winning time of 3:14.91. The B-relay team of Madie Hall (50.08), Paige Hetrick (48.87), Karoline Bennett (50.22) and Fernanda Celidonio (50.51) put up a 3:19.68.
