Louisville suffered a 6-2 loss against second-ranked Vanderbilt on Tuesday evening.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a battle of top-three teams, the third-ranked Louisville baseball team lost 6-2 against second-ranked Vanderbilt on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium in the annual Battle of the Barrel.
The loss snaps Louisville's (39-10) season-long nine-game winning streak and is the first nonconference loss for the Cardinals since Feb. 26.
After falling behind 2-0 early, the Cardinals battled back and tied the game up in the sixth. The two sides were still even heading into the eighth, when Vanderbilt (39-9) pushed a pair of runs across in each of the final two innings to secure its 12th consecutive win.
Michael Kirian (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing a pair of runs in just 0.2 innings of work. Jack Perkins made the start for the Cardinals, giving up two runs of his own across three innings. Adam Elliott threw 2.1 scoreless frames in relief of Perkins, while Shay Smiddy had a scoreless inning and Garrett Schmeltz retired the only two batters he faced.
The Commodores found the scoreboard first on Tuesday, with a RBI groundout and run-scoring single giving Vanderbilt a 2-0 edge in the third.
The Cardinals responded immediately with a run of their own in the bottom half after a double from Zeke Pinkham and RBI knock off the bat of Lucas Dunn with two outs.
It was more two-out work in the sixth, as Danny Oriente knotted the game up at two apiece doubling home Logan Wyatt, who had a double of his own earlier in the inning.
Both teams had leadoff baserunners in the seventh that were advanced on sacrifice bunts. However, neither side was able to bring the run home sending the game to the eighth all square before the Commodores moved in front for good on a bases loaded double.
Eight of nine starters had at least one hit on the night for the Cardinals, led by Oriente's 2-for-3 showing at the plate. The Cardinals had nine hits as a team, but left eight runners on base in the loss.
Louisville will head on the road next for three games at Virginia starting on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., ET in Charlottesville.
