No. 3 Cardinals Split Doubleheader at Virginia
May 10, 2019 | Baseball
Louisville won the opening game 15-7 before a 10-2 loss in the nightcap.
Louisville (40-11, 19-7 ACC) pounded out 15 runs on 15 hits for a 15-7 victory in Friday's opener before a 10-2 loss in the nightcap. The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the series on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., ET.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the day, the Cardinals got the offense rolling in the second inning. Alex Binelas scalded a line drive to the left-centerfield wall to bring Logan Wyatt home for the opening run. An error and a walk loaded the bases and Justin Lavey promptly unloaded them with a grand slam for his third homer of the season.
The grand slam was the first of the season for the Cardinals, and first since Wyatt cleared the bases with a long ball against Kent State in the 2018 NCAA Regional.
Louisville kept adding on with three more in the third, getting RBIs from Henry Davis, Lucas Dunn and Jake Snider.
Virginia (28-21, 11-15) kept the game interesting with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the third and another on a solo homer in the fourth that made it an 8-6 game through four.
It would be all Cardinals the rest of the way though, with Danny Oriente doubling in a run in the sixth and Zach Britton added another on a sacrifice fly. Wyatt had a sacrifice fly of his own in the seventh and Tyler Fitzgerald capped off the offensive performance with a long three-run blast in the eighth.
Fitzgerald finished the game at 3-for-5 with the three RBIs. Lavey had three hits of his own as well, driving in four on the grand slam and scoring three times. Binelas and Snider also had multi-hit showings.
Reid Detmers (10-2) became the 13th different player in program history to tally double digit victories in a single season. The sophomore struck out seven in 5.1 innings for the win.
The nightcap belonged to the Cavaliers, despite the fact that the Cardinals scored first. Wyatt cashed in a one-out double from Snider, muscling a single into centerfield to plate the game's first run.
Virginia responded with three runs in the bottom half, four more in the second and another in the third to take a commanding 8-1 lead after three.
Snider brought home the only other Louisville run of the game in the fifth with a bases loaded infield single, but it was immediately countered with a run for the Cavaliers in the bottom of the frame.
Bobby Miller (4-1) allowed the first eight runs of the game in just 2.1 innings for his first loss of the season. Luke Smith covered the final 5.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two runs on six hits.
