Cardinals Take 12-6 Loss in Rubber Game at Virginia
May 11, 2019 | Baseball
Louisville dropped consecutive games for just the third time this season.
Louisville (40-12, 19-8 ACC) has now lost consecutive games for just the third time this season.
Alex Binelas launched his 10th home run of the season in the third inning on Saturday, the first Cardinal to reach double digits since Drew Ellis, Colby Fitch and Brendan McKay all did it in 2017. Binelas is also the first UofL freshman to reach 10 home runs since Chris Dominguez hit 15 in 2007 as a redshirt-freshman.
The solo blast was one of three runs scored in the first three innings for the Cardinals, but the offensive output in the first and second innings for the Cavaliers was too much to overcome.
Virginia (29-21, 12-15) took advantage of four Louisville errors in the bottom of the first inning to the tune of seven runs and never looked back. The Cavaliers added four more in the second and another in the fourth and led 12-3 through four.
The margin held at nine until Logan Wyatt teed off on a 3-1 fastball for a long three-run home run in the seventh inning. The long ball was the eighth of the year for the junior, adding to his career-high total.
Glenn Albanese (1-1) didn't make it out of the first for the Cardinals, allowing seven runs on five hits while recording just two outs. However, just one of the seven runs was earned against Albanese.
Shay Smiddy put together his longest outing of the season out of the bullpen. The junior allowed just one run on three hits across four innings. Garrett Schmeltz and Michael McAvene combined to hold the Cavaliers scoreless over the final two frames.
Wyatt and Jake Snider each had two hits on the day, with Snider recording multiple hits for the third straight contest.
Louisville travels to Bloomington, Indiana, on Tuesday to take on the Hoosiers in the final week of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., ET with the game scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.
