Records Tumble as No. 6 Cardinals Race Past Alabama A&M 32-1
April 26, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals took the opening game of the weekend series Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (33-9) kept its offensive fireworks rolling with the second-most runs in school history on 28 hits, the most for the program since at least 2000.
Alex Binelas stole the show on Friday, recording the sixth cycle in program history and first since 1998. Binelas laced an RBI single in the first inning before a three-run homer in the second. The freshman then added a double in the third to get three-fourths of the way to the cycle through three innings.
Binelas grounded out for a RBI in the fourth and was hit by a pitch in the sixth. The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, native lined a ball to the wall in the seventh, but stopped at second for his second double of the night. In his final at bat of the evening, Binelas drove a pitch to right that rolled to the wall and ended with him standing on third to complete the cycle.
For the night, Binelas was 5-for-6 with five runs scored and eight RBIs.
Louisville led 18-0 after four innings on Friday, plating four runs in the first and fourth innings and five in the second and third. The Cardinals then exploded for 10 runs in the seventh, before capping the night with four more in the eighth.
Thirteen different Cardinals had at least one hit in the game, with nine players registering multiple knocks.
Tyler Fitzgerald was 3-for-3 with two doubles, four runs scored and four RBIs. Jared Poland replaced Fitzgerald in the fifth inning and proceeded to rack up a 3-for-4 night of his own with four RBIs. Danny Oriente was 3-for-4 as well with three doubles, two runs scored and four driven in.
Lucas Dunn reached in all four of his trips to the plate, scoring four times, while Ethan Stringer and Ben Metzinger came off the bench to each go 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Reid Detmers (8-2) was the beneficiary of the offensive output Friday night. The lefthander struck out 12 of the 16 batters he faced over five innings, allowing just a single in the fourth as the only batter to reach. Kerry Wright, Shay Smiddy and Austin Dickey each struck out a pair in scoreless innings of relief, while Carter Lohman added a strikeout in the eighth.
As a staff, the Cardinals set a Jim Patterson Stadium record with 19 strikeouts overall, surpassing the previous high of 18 done three times, including earlier this season against Georgia Tech.
The series continues on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m., ET. Third Street will be closed for part of Saturday for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon. Fans are encouraged to park at Cardinal Stadium and walk across the Central Avenue bridge to enter Jim Patterson Stadium.
