No. 6 Cardinals Power Past Alabama A&M 15-3
April 27, 2019 | Baseball
Louisville improved to 34-9 on the season with Saturday’s win at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (34-9) has now scored at least 10 runs in eight of its 11 games and has double digit hits in 10 of the last 12 contests.
Eight Cardinals finished with at least two hits, led for the second straight day by Alex Binelas. The freshman followed up his cycle on Friday night with a 3-for-4 day Saturday, tallying a pair of doubles and a triple with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Danny Oriente added his fourth and fifth doubles of the weekend and matched his career high with four RBIs. Jake Snider had a pair of hits, including a two-run triple, while Tyler Fitzgerald reached base four times, driving in two and scoring twice.
Justin Lavey finished 2-for-3 with his second home run of the season and the trio of Lucas Dunn, Zach Britton and Zeke Pinkham all finished with two hits apiece as well.
Nick Bennett (6-2) allowed three runs across five innings on the mound for the Cardinals. The victory was the 19th of the junior's career, moving him into a tie with Derek Self (2009-12) for ninth-place on Louisville's all-time list.
Following Bennett's outing, the Louisville bullpen retired the final 12 batters of the game in order to slam the door shut. Bryan Hoeing worked the sixth and seventh, with Jared Poland and Michael McAvene taking the final two innings.
The Cardinals jumped on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, however Alabama A&M (13-32) put three runs up in the top of the third to take their first lead of the weekend.
The lead would be short-lived though, as Oriente banged a double off the left-centerfield wall in the bottom half of the third to push the Cardinals back in front for good.
Lavey's solo home run came as part of a two-run fourth for UofL and the Cardinals put the game well out of reach with nine more runs in the seventh inning.
Louisville and Alabama A&M will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
