The Cardinals improved to 19-6 on the season with the win Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 10th-ranked Louisville baseball team tallied a 6-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The victory moved the Cardinals to 19-6 on the season with their 14th win in 18 games on their home field.
Luke Smith (3-0) stayed unbeaten with six innings of work, allowing just a single run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Bryan Hoeing chipped in two shutout innings in his first relief appearance of the season, while Carter Lohman and Glenn Albanese combined for a scoreless ninth.
Miami (18-5) scored the opening run of the ballgame, taking advantage of a Louisville defensive miscue and plating a run on a double in the second inning. The Cardinals answered right back however, sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning and putting four runs on the board.
Alex Binelas legged out an infield single to start the frame and Pat Rumoro walked to put two runners on. A pickoff attempt to second base ended up in centerfield allowing the runners to advance 90 feet, and Drew Campbell cashed in the RBI with a groundout to tie the game at one.
Justin Lavey rolled a ball deep into the hole at shortstop for a run-scoring single with two outs and later scored on a double steal, taking off for the plate as the Redhawks unsuccessfully attempted to throw out Trey Leonard at second. Logan Wyatt capped the scoring in the inning with a bases loaded walk that scored Leonard.
Louisville added the final runs of the night in the fourth, as Jake Snider singled through the drawn-in infield to bring Leonard home for a second time. Snider would then score on a wild pitch three batters later to stretch the lead to five and give the Cardinals their final margin.
The Redhawks were limited to just three baserunners over the final five innings.
Five different Cardinals each had one hit on the night, with Leonard scoring a pair of runs and Lavey tallying two of the team's four stolen bases.
Louisville returns to conference action this weekend with three games against Wake Forest at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
