LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Justin Lavey walk-off single capped a successful night at the ballpark for the eighth-ranked Louisville baseball team, as the Cardinals took a pair of games from Brown on Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (4-2) came within an out of a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory to start the day and closed it out with a 5-4 win in extra innings. The Cardinals will try to complete the series sweep on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., ET.
Friday's doubleheader started with dominant pitching, as Reid Detmers was nearly perfect in his second start of the season. The sophomore mowed down the first 16 batters he faced before issuing a one-out walk in the sixth inning. The southpaw struck out the side in the second and fourth innings during a stretch of eight strikeouts in nine hitters.
Detmers (1-0) struck out two more after the walk to finish the sixth, and set down the side in order in the seventh to mark the end of his day. Detmers finished the day with seven hitless innings and a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Freshman Jack Perkins took over on the mound in the eighth, working around a two-out free pass in a scoreless eighth and retiring the first two batters in the ninth. One out away from history, a looping fly ball deflected off the glove of a sliding Zach Britton in right field for the first and only hit of the game for the Bears.
The top of the lineup carried the load offensively for the Cardinals in game one, with Lucas Dunn, Jake Snider and Tyler Fitzgerald combining to go 8-for-10 at the plate with five runs and five RBIs. All three set career-highs in the win as Snider was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, while Dunn scored four times and Fitzgerald drove in four.
Friday's nightcap was filled with drama as well, with the Cardinals falling behind 4-2 after Brown (0-2) plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Louisville chipped away at the lead with Snider driving in one in the bottom half of the fifth and Alex Binelas tying the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
Bobby Miller took care of business on the mound for the Cardinals in relief of Nick Bennett, who allowed four runs, three earned, in his five innings of work. Miller punched out a career-best eight batters over four innings to keep the game tied and send it into extra innings.
Brown threatened in its half of the 10th, drawing a leadoff walk and bunting the runner into scoring position. A two-out walk put two on, but Jared Poland extinguished the fire inducing a flyout to right to end the inning.
In the bottom half, Danny Oriente drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning and Trey Leonard came off the bench to steal second. After a strikeout, Drew Campbell beat out a soft groundball to first, moving the winning run 90 feet closer. A fly to left wasn't deep enough to bring Leonard home from third, but Lavey delivered the two-out winner with a clean single to right to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Poland earned his first collegiate victory in the nightcap, while Logan Wyatt led the offense with a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
