
No. 9/12 Cardinals Win Seven Events During Purdue Invitational Finals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 9/12 University of Louisville men's and women's swim team won seven of 10 events during day one finals of the Purdue Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

After the first day of competition, the Cardinal women lead the team race with 323.5 points ahead of Purdue (172). The men also sit in first with a score of 264 ahead of the Boilermakers (201).

The Cardinals got off to a dominant start as the women's 200 freestyle relay team of Lainey Visscher (22.72), Casey Fanz (21.59), Avery Braunecker (22.31), and Christiana Regenauer (21.73) won in 1:28.35, over three seconds ahead of the field and fast enough for an NCAA 'A' cut.

Mihalis Deliyiannis (20.02), Tanner Cummings (19.39), Michael Eastman (19.72), and Haridi Sameh (19.41) combined to finish second in the men's 200 freestyle relay in 1:18.54, right behind Purdue who won in 1:18.40.

It was a Louisville sweep of the women's 500 freestyle led by Sophie Cattermole's winning time of 4:42.41. Maria Sumida took a close second in 4:42.56 while Arina Openysheva finished third in 4:47.30. Alena Kraus (4:51.26) took seventh and Maddie Luther (4:50.75) won the consolation heat.

The Cardinal men also saw a sweep of the 500 freestyle as Hayden Curley led the charge in 4:20.63, followed by Jarrett Jones (4:22.96) and Ilia Sibirtsev (4:22.97). T.C. Smith (4:24.67) was sixth and Colton Paulson (4:28.22) finished eighth as Sam Steele won the B-final in 4:25.96.

Grace Oglesby led the women's 200 individual medley from start to finish, securing another Cardinal victory in 1:57.93. Mariia Astashkina (2:00.18), Diana Dunn (2:00.73), and Abby Hay (2:02.05) also competed in the A-final while Sumida (1:59.56) claimed the B-final.

It was a tight race in the men's 200 individual medley as Daniel Sos took a close second in 1:44.86 to Purdue's Trent Pellini (1:44.81). Evgenii Somov stopped the clock in 1:46.69 for third and Chase Sellers took eighth in 1:49.36.

The Cardinals dominated the women's 50 freestyle as Fanz sprinted to the top of the podium in 22.16, followed by Visscher (22.26), Regenauer (22.45), and Openysheva (22.64). Nastja Govejsek (22.96) tied for fifth and Braunecker (23.15) finished seventh.

Deliyiannis was the Cards' top finisher in the men's 50 freestyle, taking second in 19.75 behind Blaise Vera of Pitt's nation-leading 19.10. Eastman (19.93) took fourth and Cummings (20.04) raced to sixth while Sameh (19.92) won the consolation final.

Ashlyn Schoof (53.50), Astashkina (1:00.38), Oglesby (52.05), and Fanz (48.84) combined in 3:34.77 to post a convincing five-second victory in the women's 400 medley relay. Mitchell Whyte (46.25), Somov (52.56), Nicholas Albiero (46.20), and Eastman (43.25) won the men's relay in 3:08.26 to conclude the first day.
