Three win All-American honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's swimming team had a bronze medal performance from Grigory Tarasevich to cap a stellar day at the Day 3 finals of the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday night at McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Along with Tarasevich's bronze medal finish, the Cardinals had two other swimmers compete in the A-Finals with Carlos Claverie boarding fourth in the 100 breaststroke and Nolan Tesone finishing eighth in the 400 IM. The Cardinals' 200-yard medley squad finished fifth in 1:24.08 to put an end to one of the best days in the history of the program.
"Today was one of the best single days in the history of our program," said head coach Arthur Albiero. "We are competing with a great team energy and pride. 3 individual A-Finals for Tesone, Claverie, and Tarasevich and an A-Final for the 200-medley relay. In reality, all we have done is set ourselves up for a great session tomorrow morning. We moved up to 9th overall but it is a super tight field between 6th and 12th. I am proud of the toughness our team continues to display."
After three days of action, the Cardinals are currently sitting in 9th place with 134.5 points. Texas leads the field with 366 points while California is in second with 271 points and Florida is third with 255 points. NC State (197), Georgia (162), Tennessee (152), Alabama (143), Missouri (140) round out the top eight.
In the 100 backstroke, California's Ryan Murphy had an historic night as he set an NCAA record with a time of 43.49 en route to his third straight title in the event. Grigory Tarasevich was neck to neck with Alabama's Connor Oslin and touched third in 45.33. In the 100 breaststroke, Carlos Claverie finished tied for fourth with Virginia Tech's Brandon Fiala in 52.14 to earn All-American honors.
The 200-yard medley relay squad knocked almost a second off their preliminaries time with a fifth place finish as they edged Tennessee's relay squad by .03 seconds. Tarasevich swam the third fastest split (21.14) before giving way to Claverie (23.67), Quallen (20.20) and the anchor, Trevor Carroll (19.07) for the fifth place finish.
The evening session began with Nolan Tesone finishing 8th in the 400 IM with a time of 3:43.28 to earn All-American honors. In the 100 butterfly, Pedro Coutinho finished 13th with a time of 46.21 and Trevor Carroll finished 16th in the 200 freestyle after advancing to the finals after a swim-off from the morning preliminaries.
Racing concludes tomorrow with the 200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, platform diving, 400-free relay with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
