LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Following a record-setting 2013 collegiate season, the Louisville baseball program has announced the Cardinals' summer league assignments, which include 19 underclassmen scheduled to play in four different wooden bat leagues and for the USA Collegiate National Team in 2013.
With summer baseball in full swing around the nation, the Louisville players are getting a late start after the Cardinals reached the College World Series for the second time in seven seasons. Leading the UofL contingent into summer ball is righthanded pitcher Nick Burdi, who will compete with Team USA. Selected to the team in April, Burdi joins the USA Collegiate National Team during the first of two summer collegiate league tours in North Carolina. Team USA is also scheduled to play at Japan and Cuba later in the summer.
A year after leading the nation with nine players in the prestigious Cape Cod League, the Cardinals have a total of six players assigned to the league this summer. Playing for the Wareham Gatemen will be outfielder/lefthanded pitcher Cole Sturgeon, lefty pitcher Joe Filomeno, righty Jared Ruxer and infielder Danny Rosenbaum. Righty Kyle Funkhouser is assigned to the Chatham Anglers, while outfielder Jeff Gardner is slated to play for the Bourne Braves.
Louisville has eight players assigned to the New England Collegiate League led by righty pitcher Brandon Alphin, catcher Zack Soria and lefty pitcher Robert Strader with the Vermont Mountaineers. Infielder Zach Lucas and righty Jordan Simons are tabbed for the Keene Swamp Bats, righty Jonah Philley and infielder Jordan Striegel are playing for the Saratoga Brigade while lefty pitcher Kyle McGrath is assigned to the Newport Gulls.
In the Coastal Plain League, outfielder Mike White and infielder Sutton Whiting will play for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms, while in the Great Lakes League, lefty Jakson Deyer and righthanded pitcher/first baseman Michael Bollmer are assigned to the Lexington Hustlers.
Following the completion of the collegiate summer season, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue the Cardinals' preparation for the 2014 college baseball season. Along with the return to Omaha, Louisville won a school record 51 games, its fourth BIG EAST regular season title in five seasons and hosted NCAA postseason games for the fourth time in seven seasons in 2013.
