LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is this week's Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 20 players competing this summer.
On Wednesday night, Louisville right-handed pitcher Jeff Thompson and shortstop Alex Chittenden, both members of the Keene Swamp Bats, represented the West squad in the 2011 New England League All-Star Game in Lynn, Mass. As the starting pitcher for the West, Thompson pitched a perfect first inning with one strikeout before giving way to the bullpen, while Chittenden was 0-for-2 at the plate as the starting shortstop for the West, which lost 3-1.
Overall, seven Louisville players have been named to summer league All-Star rosters in 2011. Catcher Kyle Gibson played in the Great Lakes League All-Star Game on July 13 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, while right-handed pitcher Travis Tingle and outfielder Adam Engel competed in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game on July 18 in Fayetteville, N.C. Last week, right-handed pitchers Matt Koch and Justin Amlung were named Cape Cod League All-Stars, with that game slated for Friday at 7 p.m., ET at Fenway Park in Boston.
The Cardinals had 19 underclassmen and one incoming signee assigned to wooden bat summer baseball leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
