LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is this week's Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 20 players competing this summer.
On Tuesday, Louisville right-handed pitcher Jeff Thompson and shortstop Alex Chittenden, both members of the Keene Swamp Bats, were selected to compete in next week's New England League All-Star Game. Thompson will earn the start on the mound for the Western squad, while Chittenden be the Western squad's starting shortstop in the game, which is set for July 27 at 6:30 p.m., ET in Lynn, Mass.
The Cardinals have 19 returning underclassman and one incoming signee assigned to wooden bat summer baseball leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
Cape Cod League
- In his most recent start on July 14, RHP Justin Amlung (Wareham Gatemen) allowed only one run on six hits with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings in a no-decision against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. In six starts this summer, Amlung is 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 35.0 innings pitched.
- In his last two outings, RHP Matt Koch (Chatham Anglers) allowed only one hit with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of shutout relief. Overall, he is 1-0 with a team-low 1.45 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched and 13 total appearances this summer.
Coastal Plain League
- In Monday's Coastal Plain League All-Star Game in Fayetteville, RHP Travis Tingle (Thomasville HiToms) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the American squad. In his most recent outing for the HiToms on Tuesday night, he pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his 10th save of the summer. Overall, he is 4-0 to go with the 10 saves in 21 relief appearances. He has 30 strikeouts in 29.0 innings of work and an ERA of 4.03.
- OF Adam Engel has hit safely in six straight games for the Florence RedWolves, including a 3-for-5 performance with two RBI and two runs scored on July 16 against the Columbia Blowfish. Overall, he is hitting .278 with two home runs, 25 RBI, 28 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 24 attempts in 36 games played.
- OF Cole Sturgeon (Thomasville HiToms) is hitting .217 with eight runs scored, five RBI and two doubles in 16 starts and 21 games this summer.
New England League
- RHP Jeff Thompson (Keene Swamp Bats) will be the starting pitcher for the Western squad in next week's New England League All-Star Game. Tied for the league lead in strikeouts with 41, he has compiled a 2.51 ERA over 28.2 innings of work and has recorded an impressive 4.1/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (K/BB) this season.
- IF Alex Chittenden (Keene Swamp Bats) will be the starting shortstop for the Western squad in next week's New England League All-Star Game. On Tuesday night, he was 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in a win over Newport. On the season, Chittenden is batting .321 and leads the league with 25 runs scored. He also has five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBI this summer.
- LHP Cody Ege (Vermont Mountaineers) is 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA and 23 strikeouts in eight appearances (five starts) and 35.0 innings pitched this summer. Most recently, he allowed just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in a no-decision in a start against North Shore on July 14.
Great Lakes League
- In the Great Lakes League All-Star Game on July 13 at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, catcher Kyle Gibson (Lexington Hustlers) singled in his only plate appearance. For the summer, he is hitting .276 with nine RBI, three doubles, two triples, six runs scored and 10 walks in 22 regular season games.
Cal Ripken League
- For the summer, C Jeff Gardner (Baltimore Redbirds) is hitting .269 with two home runs, eight doubles, 12 runs scored and 16 RBI in 31 games.
- RHP Brandon Alphin (Baltimore Redbirds) is 4-0 with 18 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.70 in eight appearances (six starts) and 31.2 innings pitched this summer.
- RHP Curtis McCombs (Baltimore Redbirds) is 1-1 with a 4.13 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched and nine appearances this summer.
Northwoods League
- 1B Zak Wasserman (Mankato MoonDogs) is hitting .259 with 14 RBI, 14 runs scored and 19 walks in 37 games this summer.
