LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Here is this week's Louisville baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the Cardinals' 20 players competing this summer.
Three Louisville players were named to summer league All-Star rosters during the last week. Catcher Kyle Gibson will play in tonight's Great Lakes League All-Star Game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, while outfielder Adam Engel and right-handed pitcher Travis Tingle were selected to play in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game on Monday (July 18) in Fayetteville, N.C.
The Cardinals have 19 returning underclassman and one incoming signee assigned to wooden bat summer baseball leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
Cape Cod League
- In his most recent start on July 7, RHP Justin Amlung (Wareham Gatemen) allowed just four hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 shutout innings in a no-decision against the Bourne Braves. In five starts this summer, Amlung is 2-1 with a 1.61 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched.
- In his two outings during the last week, RHP Matt Koch (Chatham Anglers) allowed only one hit with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of shutout relief. Overall, he is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched and 11 total appearances this summer.
- RHP Dace Kime (Chatham Anglers) is 1-2 with a 3.34 ERA in eight appearances and five starts this summer. He has 24 strikeouts in 29.2 innings of work.
- In his last outing on July 9 against Chatham, RHP Andy Flett (Wareham Gatemen) pitched 1.0 inning of shutout relief with two strikeouts to earn his first win of the summer. Overall, he is 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA and seven strikeouts in five relief appearances and 7.0 innings pitched.
Coastal Plain League
- On Tuesday, OF Adam Engel (Florence RedWolves) was named to the National squad for the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game on July 18 (7 p.m.) in Fayetteville, N.C. Overall, he is hitting .268 with one home run, 22 RBI, 23 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 24 attempts in 32 games played.
- On Wednesday, RHP Travis Tingle (Thomasville HiToms) was named to the American squad for the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game on July 18. Overall, he is 4-0 with eight saves in 18 relief appearances this summer. He has 26 strikeouts in 26.0 innings of work and an ERA of 3.81.
- OF Cole Sturgeon (Thomasville HiToms) is hitting .237 with eight runs scored, four RBI and two doubles in 14 starts and 17 games this summer.
New England League
- IF Alex Chittenden (Keene Swamp Bats) has hit safely in five straight games and seven of his last eight overall. On July 9, he had one of his best games of the summer at the plate going 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in a win over the Holyoke Blue Sox. Overall, he is hitting .337 with 15 RBI and 21 runs scored in 26 games this summer. He also has nine multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit performances.
- In his last start, RHP Jeff Thompson (Keene Swamp Bats) had 10 strikeouts and allowed just one run on four hits in 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Mystic Schooners on July 8. Overall, he is 1-2 in five starts with a 2.38 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched. He has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his five starts and has finished with at least five strikeouts in every outing.
- LHP Cody Ege (Vermont Mountaineers) is 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA and 16 strikeouts in seven appearances (four starts) and 23.1 innings pitched this summer.
Great Lakes League
- On July 10, C Kyle Gibson (Lexington Hustlers) was named to the South squad for the Great Lakes League All-Star Game set for today (July 13) at 6 p.m., ET at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. Overall, he is hitting .293 with eight RBI, three doubles, two triples, three runs scored and six walks in 17 regular season games this summer.
- In four starts this summer, RHP Mike Nastold (Cincinnati Steam) is 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched. He has struck out eight batters in each of his last two starts.
Cal Ripken League
- On Tuesday, C Jeff Gardner (Baltimore Redbirds) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in a win over the Southern Maryland Nationals. Overall, he is hitting .258 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 26 games this summer.
- In his only outing during the last week, RHP Curtis McCombs (Baltimore Redbirds) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of shutout relief on July 9 against Southern Maryland. Overall, he is 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched and seven appearances this summer.
Northwoods League
- 1B Zak Wasserman (Mankato MoonDogs) is hitting .272 with 14 RBI, 14 runs scored and 16 walks in 32 games this summer.
