LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the summer wooden bat baseball leagues in full swing, UofLSports.com is providing weekly updates with highlights on the progress of the 20 Louisville baseball players competing this summer.
The Cardinals have 19 returning underclassman and one incoming signee playing summer baseball in wooden bat leagues around the nation in 2011. Following the completion of the collegiate summer leagues, players will return to campus for the fall semester in mid-August to continue Louisville's preparation for the 2012 college baseball season.
Cape Cod League
- In his first start of the summer on June 10, RHP Justin Amlung (Wareham Gatemen) allowed only one earned run on just two hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work while taking a no-decision as Wareham lost 4-3 to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Amlung is slated to make his second start of the season tonight (Thursday, June 16) at Orleans.
- RHP Chad Green (Bourne Braves) has one appearance on the mound this summer pitching 3.0 innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts and only two hits against the Harwich Mariners on June 13.
- After pitching 1.0 inning of perfect relief on June 10 against the Cotuit Kettleers in his summer debut, RHP Dace Kime (Chatham Anglers) earned his first win in the Cape Code League with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed in 6.0 scoreless innings in the starting role against the Falmouth Commodores on June 13.
- On Wednesday night, RHP Matt Koch (Chatham Anglers) came out of the bullpen for 2.2 innings of shutout relief allowing only one hit with four strikeouts against the Brewster Whitecaps.
Coastal Plain League
- OF Adam Engel is off to a hot start for the Florence RedWolves hitting .333 with one home run, 17 RBI (team-leader) and seven stolen bases in eight attempts in his 12 games. In his CPL debut on June 2, Engel was 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored in a 15-8 win over the Columbia Blowfish. - With four relief appearances already this summer for the Thomasville HiToms, RHP Travis Tingle is 1-0 with two saves and a 1.69 ERA. He has four strikeouts in his 5.1 innings of work. In his most recent outing, Tingle struck out the side in an inning of shutout relief on June 11 against the Forest City Owls.
New England League
- IF Alex Chittenden was outstanding in his first week with the Keene Swamp Bats hitting .545 with two RBI, two runs scored and two doubles in three games. He made his New England League debut by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in a 7-0 win over the Vermont Mountaineers. Most recently, he was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks on June 14 against the Sanford Mainers.
Northwoods League
- On Wednesday night, 1B Zak Wasserman (Mankato MoonDogs) was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the MoonDogs' 5-4 win over the Willmar Stingers. Overall, Wasserman is hitting .298 with five RBI and nine runs scored in 12 games this summer.
