LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After an early deficit, the University of Louisville Cardinals plated nine unanswered runs to capture a 9-3 win over Cincinnati Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium, in the deciding game of the three-game weekend set.
For the third time in as many games, the Bearcats (25-17, 12-6 BIG EAST) put runs on the board in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on the Cards on a two-run double by Mike Spina and an RBI double off the bat of Cameron Satterwhite.
Louisville (26-16, 10-8 BIG EAST) answered by manufacturing a run in the bottom of the inning. John Dao walked, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch by UC starter Tyler Smith, before Phil Wunderlich's RBI groundout put the Cards on the board.
The Cards evened the score at three in the second inning. Tyler Mickits wired his fourth double of the season down the right field line and Drew Haynes walked. Dao singled home Mickits and after a walk to Wunderlich loaded the bases, Justin McClanahan hit a sac fly to center that tied the game up.
In the fifth Chris Dominguez and Andrew Clark hit consecutive singles and Jeff Arnold reached on a bunt single to load the bases and extend his career-long hit streak to 13 games.
Freshman Stewart Ijames hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to put the Cards on top 4-3, and an RBI fielder's choice by Mickits made it 5-3.
The Bearcats loaded the bases in the seventh, putting the tying run in scoring position, but reliever Matt Lea got Satterwhite to ground out to second to end the threat.
The offense then responded in the seventh with four more runs to put the game out of reach.
Arnold, Ijames, Mickits and Haynes all singled in consecutive order with one out, with Mickits and Haynes each plating runs. Dao then doubled home a run, and Wunderlich closed the inning with another RBI groundout for the 9-3 final.
Both starters were ousted early and neither figured into the decision, as Smith exited after an inning and a third, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks, striking out one. Cardinal starter Bob Revesz lasted into the third, surrendering three runs on six hits, while striking out one in 2.2 IP.
Gabriel Shaw (3-3) followed Revesz and earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk to go with one strikeout.
Gavin Logsdon equalled a career-best with three K's - all looking, giving up a pair of singles in 1.2 scoreless frames.
Lea walked one in a pivotal third of an inning and closer B.J. Rosenberg tossed dominant 1-2-3 eighth and ninth innings, striking out four to seal the win.
UC reliever Matt Heber fell to 1-1 while taking the loss, giving up a run on four hits in 2.2 innings. Two more Bearcat pitchers took the hill following Heber.
Dao had his second consecutive three-hit game, as Dominguez, Arnold, Ijames, Mickits and Haynes each had two of the 14 Cardinal hits. Every Cardinal starter either drove in a run or scored a run in the win.
The bullpen combined for 5.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing five hits and a pair of walks while fanning eight.
Louisville has two games remaining in the current nine-game homestand, hosting Morehead State on Tuesday and WKU Wednesday, with both games scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. The Cards will head to the nation's capital for a three-game series at Georgetown beginning Friday.
