BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky used two big innings to double up the University of Louisville 10-5 Tuesday at Nick Denes Field.
WKU's Scott Kaskie drilled the first pitch of the bottom of the first over the fence in left for a 1-0 WKU (15-10) lead.
The Cards (14-10) evened the score in the top of the second on consecutive singles by Josh Richmond and Derrick Alfonso, a sac bunt by Stewart Ijames and an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Drew Haynes.
In the Cardinal third, Justin McClanahan and Chris Dominguez hit consecutive singles, and Dominguez took third when the throw tried to nab McClanahan at third. Andrew Clark's sac fly to center put the Cards on top, and a throwing error by WKU third baseman Terrance Dayleg plated Dominguez for a 3-1 lead.
The first big inning for the Toppers was a five-run fourth that put them on top by a score of 6-3. Five hits, an error, a hit batter and a wild pitch plated the Topper runs.
The Cardinals got a run back in the fifth on Alfonso's RBI single, making it 6-4.
It looked like the Cards would have a shot at a ninth-inning rally, but WKU plated four in the bottom of the eighth with two out, with Jake Wells' two-run double highlighting the innings for Western.
McClanahan and Dominguez put together consecutive singles to open the ninth, but Josh Richmond's sac fly to center plated the only run of the inning.
Cardinal freshman Gabriel Shaw took the hill in his first career start, and took the loss, watching his record fall to 1-3 after allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in 3.1 innings. Bob Revesz followed, giving up a pair of runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Thomas Royse walked three and gave up a hit, but managed two scoreless, striking out two. Justin Marks struck out one and walked two in an inning of relief and freshman Neil Holland worked the fateful 8th, picking up three strikeouts, but surrendering four runs on four hits and a pair of balks.
WKU reliever Evan Teague walked one in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Cards outhit WKU 14-12, but managed just one extra-base hit. McClanahan and Dominguez each had three hits for the Cards, while Dao, Richmond and Alfonso added two apiece.
The Cards host Purdue Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium before a three-game weekend set against BIG EAST-leading St. John's that begins Friday at 6:00 p.m.
