LOUISVILLE, Ky. - George Biddle tossed eight shutout innings to lead Eastern Michigan to a 9-2 win over the University of Louisville baseball team Thursday in the series opener at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Eagles (3-5) pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth inning on five singles, a wild pitch and a walk to take a 4-0 advantage. Trumaine Riley, Kyle Rhoad and Steve Bradshaw each drove in a run in the frame.
Biddle (1-1) scattered five hits and six walks, while fanning four to pick up the win.
A wild pitch by Cardinal reliever Gavin Logsdon scored the fifth run on the afternoon for the Eagles. Eastern added a pair of runs in the eighth on an solo home run to center by Aaron Powell to lead off the inning and a sac fly off the bat of Isaiah Gainforth to up the advantage to 7-0.
An RBI single by Bradshaw and an RBI double by Derek Lehrman in the ninth made it 9-0 Eagles.
Louisville (2-7) picked up their two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Jorge Castillo walked and Derrick Alfonso doubled down the left field line to put runners at second a third with one out.
A wild pitch plated Castillo and an RBI groundout by Boomer Whiting closed the scoring.
Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg dropped to 0-2 on the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits and two walks in 6.2 innings. He struck out five. Logsdon made his collegiate debut, surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
Ryne Mantooth twirled the final inning and two-thirds, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk. He struck out two.
Alfonso had the only multi-hit effort for the Cards with a single to go with his second double of the year, while eight Eagle starters had a hit and six drove in runs.
The Cards and Eagles will meet again on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET before games on Saturday and Sunday scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Admission to all home games at Patterson Stadium is free.
