LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville starting pitcher Scott Jenkins tossed seven innings of one-hit baseball, facing just three over the minimum, leading the Cardinals to a 4-0 shutout of Ball State in the series opener Friday at Patterson Stadium.
Jenkins (1-2), a junior, had a no-hitter broken up on a two-out single by Kyle Dygert in the sixth. The Louisville St. Xavier graduate set down 13 in a row at one point, and after a shaky first inning in which he walked two and hit one, Jenkins faced one over the minimum over his final six innings. He retired the side in order in the second, third, fourth and seventh, walking three and striking out four.
The Cardinals (6-12) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. Michael Urti opened with a walk and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt by BSU pitcher Ben Snyder. An RBI fielder's choice by Chris Cates on a safety squeeze plated Urti.
In the Cardinal half of the sixth, Daniel Burton singled to lead off, moved to second on a single by Jorge Castillo and a sacrifice by Logan Johnson put runners at second and third.
Derrick Alfonso's RBI single scored Burton, making it 2-0 Cards.
In the seventh, Urti doubled to right and Pete Rodriguez singled, putting runners at first and third. A sac fly by Cates scored Urti, making it 3-0 Cards, and after a single by Nick Haley, Isaiah Howes singled home Rodriguez to close the scoring.
The only Ball State (5-9) base runner to reach third got there in the ninth after back-to-back singles and a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with one out, but Griffin Bailey induced a 6-4-3 double play ground ball to end the ballgame.
Bailey struck out two, allowing two hits in two innings.
Snyder fell to 2-2 in the loss, allowing four runs, three of which were earned on seven hits and three walks in 6.1 innings. He struck out six.
Rodriguez and Castillo each had two hits for the Cards, while Urti scored twice and Cates drove in a pair. Cates added two sac bunts, a sac fly and two steals.
Haley was busy defensively at second, tying a career-high with eight assists.
Bailey is now alone in fifth place on the Cardinal career list, toeing the rubber for the 74th time in his career.
The battle of the Cardinals continues Saturday with a double header beginning at noon ET at Patterson Stadium where admission is free.
