
Cardinal Nine Beats Bulldogs 11-6

LOUISVILLE, KY - Isaiah Howes went 4 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the University of Louisville to an 11-6 win over Butler on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
An RBI single by Clayton Deeb in the top of the first put the Bulldogs (15-27) up 1-0.
Louisville evened the score in the second when Howes doubled to lead off, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Derrick Alfonso.
Butler plated two in the third on three hits to take a 3-1 lead, but the Cards responded with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the frame to even the score again.
Nick Haley reached on an error and moved to third an a single by J.T. LaFountain to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch scored Haley and Howes singled home LaFountain.
In the U of L (27-19) fourth, Alfonso singled with one away and stole second. Cates singled him to third and also swiped second base for Boomer Whiting who brought them both in with a single of his own for a 5-3 Louisville lead.
Dale Mueller's RBI double scored Jonathan Day in the Butler fifth, cutting it to 5-4.
After a one-out walk to LaFountain in the fifth, Howes tripled into the left field corner, making it 6-3, and Ryan McKinnon belted his sixth home run of the season deep to left center for an 8-4 Louisville advantage. Another RBI single by Whiting capped the inning at 9-4 Cards.
Curt Stewart's RBI single plated Howes in the sixth to make it 10-4.
Deeb doubled and scored in the Bulldog seventh to get the run back, but a bases-loaded double play brought Daniel Burton home in the bottom of the inning to close the scoring.
Trystan Magnuson came on in relief of starter Jake Smith to earn the win. Magnuson (4-5) struck out the side when he entered in the fourth and fanned five over four innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
Smith surrendered three runs on six hits in three innings. Zack Pitts closed things out for the Cards, giving up a run on three hits and a walk in two innings, while picking up his first two collegiate strikeouts.
Butler starter Bryan Bokowy (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs-three earned, on six hits and a walk, he struck out two. Three other Bulldog pitchers followed and each gave up at least one run.
For Howes, it was his second career four-hit game, both coming in this, his sophomore season. He is 16 for his last 28 with eight runs, eight RBI, six walks and seven extra-base hits over his last seven games in which he has raised his average 43 percentage points to a career-best .320.
Whiting and Cates both had three-hit efforts as nine different Cardinals got a base hit.
LaFountain is now tied for fifth all-time at U of L in career games played with 197, ninth in at bats (702), tied for ninth in runs (155), second in hit by pitches (32), fifth in doubles (46), ninth in hits (221) and 11th in walks (95).
The Cards will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, where they will face 29th ranked TCU for three over the weekend beginning Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Cards are a C-USA best 9-3 on the road in league play and 4-2 against ranked teams in 2005. The Horned Frogs are currently in second place in the league and are 9-3 at home in league play.
