FORT WORTH, TX - TCU's Lance Broadway tossed a complete game six-hitter, striking out 12 to lead the 24th-ranked Horned Frogs to a 4-1 win over the University of Louisville Friday in the series opener.
Cardinal (27-20, 12-12) hurlers Mike Lynn, Jake Smith and Jon Harbridge scattered eight hits and only allowed three earned runs, but couldn't overcome the performance of the TCU ace.
The Horned Frogs (35-15, 18-7 C-USA) loaded the bases with one out in the second on a pair of walks and an error. A single to center by Matt Carpenter plated one and Kyle Dahlberg's sac fly to right made it 2-0 TCU.
Chris Cates lead off the top of the third with an infield single, Boomer Whiting followed with a bunt single and they both moved up a station on Nick Haley's sixth sac bunt of the season. J.T LaFountain's sac fly to left then scored Cates to make it 2-1 Frogs.
TCU loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth and a bloop single to left by Austin Adams was just out of reach of a diving Cates to plate two more and give the Frogs a 4-1 advantage.
Lynn (2-2) tossed five strong innings but took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks, striking out four. Smith gave up a pair of hits and struck out one in 2.2 innings of relief. Harbridge walked one before retiring the final TCU batter.
Broadway(12-1) walked just one, in establishing new school single season records for wins and strikeouts (125).
Cates and LaFountain each had two hits for the Cards in a game that did not feature an extra-base hit.
The teams meet Saturday at 8:00 p.m. ET for game two of the series.
