LOUISVILLE, KY - Sophomore B.J. Rosenberg was dominant, allowing one run over seven innings on five hits, as the University of Louisville baseball team upended number one Tulane 6-2 on Friday in the series opener.
Boomer Whiting opened the bottom of the first with his second home run of the season, belting an 0-1 pitch to right-center, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Nick Haley then reached on an error by second baseman Joe Holland and moved to third on an errant pick-off attempt by pitcher Micah Owings. Isaiah Howes singled Haley home to put the Cards up 2-0 in the first.
A solo home run by Brad Emaus put the Green Wave (20-4, 3-1) on the board in the third, cutting the Cardinal lead to 2-1.
Louisville (13-6, 4-0) got the run back in the fifth when an RBI single by Haley scored Whiting from third to make it 3-1 Cards.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jorge Castillo singled with one out, and Howes and Daniel Burton followed with singles of their own to load the bases. Senior DH Greg Taylor doubled down the left field line to score two, and freshman Derrick Alfonso then singled up the middle for another run, putting the Cards up 6-1.
Tulane's Scott Madden doubled and later scored from third on a wild pitch in the eighth to close the book on the scoring.
Rosenberg (2-0) walked three and struck out just two, but faced only six over the minimum to earn the win.
Griffin Bailey gave up a run on a hit in the eighth and Brian Halford set down the side in order in the ninth to close it out for the Cards.
Owings (2-3), a two-time First Team All-ACC selection at Georgia Tech prior to transferring to Tulane, took the loss, surrendering six runs - five earned, on 11 hits and a walk in 6.1 innings. He struck out seven. Billy Mohl finished up for the Wave, allowing two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings.
Whiting, J.T. LaFountain, Castillo, Howes and Taylor each had two hits on the night.
Louisville is now 3-1 against ranked teams this season and atop the C-USA standings.
These same two teams will meet on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET for game two of the series. Admission is free at Cardinal Stadium.
