Louisville closed the opening weekend with an 13-1 mercy rule win.
ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Louisville baseball team punctuated a good opening weekend with an 13-1 mercy rule victory over No. 12 Arizona on Sunday in the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field.
Louisville exits the season-opening tournament with a pair of victories over top 15 teams after defeated seventh-ranked Texas on Friday night.
All the offense the Cardinals needed on Sunday came in the fifth inning. After managing just three baserunners through the first four innings, the bats came alive in the fifth.
Tague Davis drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and a Kamau Neighbors single put runners on the corners. Alex Alicea then lined out to shortstop for the second out, but the throwing attempt to double off Neighbors at first sailed into the Arizona dugout bringing Davis across for Louisville's first run.
It turned into a hit parade from there. Lucas Moore broke a 1-1 tie with a single to center that scored Neighbors, starting a run of six consecutive base knocks for the Cardinals.
Matt Klein, Jake Munroe and Garret Pike had RBI singles on three consecutive pitches and Eddie King Jr. drove in a pair with a triple off the right-centerfield wall.
Alicea finished off the eight-run frame with a bases loaded walk. The Cardinals sent 14 batters to the plate, with 11 reaching and seven getting hits.
Louisville then pushed five more runs across in the eighth to bring the mercy rule into play.
Klein, Munroe, Pike and King Jr. had consecutive run-scoring hits for the second time in the game before George Baker recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI.
Rose, Klein and King Jr. all finished with three hits as part of a 17-hit Louisville offensive attack. King drove in three, while five different players scored multiple runs.
On the mound, Peter Michael turned in a strong showing in his first appearance with the Cards. The right-hander allowed just one run on one hit over 4.2 innings with a career high five strikeouts.
Colton Hartman, Brennyn Cutts and Wyatt Danilowicz combined to cover the final 3.1 innings without allowing a hit.
Louisville now returns home to open up an 18-game homestand. The Cardinals host Xavier for their home opener on Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
