LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team will open the home portion of its 2025 schedule with a three-game series against Western Michigan beginning Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday, and 3 p.m. ET on Monday. All three games will be televised on ACC Network Extra and can be heard on 970 WGTK.
PAIR OF RANKED WINS TO OPEN SEASON
The Cardinals began the 2025 campaign with a pair of ranked wins at the Shriners Children's College Showdown in Arlington, Texas. Louisville rallied back for a 4-3 walk-off victory over No. 7 Texas on opening night and capped the weekend with a 13-1 win in eight innings over No. 12 Arizona.
RANKED SUCCESS OUT OF THE GATE
Louisville secured two wins over ranked foes in the opening weekend for the first time in Dan McDonnell's 19 seasons. The Cardinals were one of only four teams to notch multiple ranked wins over teams in the D1Baseball preseason top 25 to start the season.
WESTERN MICHIGAN SERIES HISTORY
The Louisville-Western Michigan series dates back to 1971, with the Broncos holding a 22-8 all-time edge after a dominant 21-1 stretch from 1971-81. However, the Cards have won seven of the last eight, including a 6-1 victory in the opening game of the 2016 Louisville Regional.

Louisville brought in 10 transfers (6 four-year, 4 junior college) for the 2025 season, many of which played large roles in Louisville's opening weekend success.

TEAM NOTES
- The Cards are 15-3 in home openers during Dan McDonnell's first 18 seasons.
- Louisville has an .815 winning percentage (172-39) in regular season non-conference games since the start of 2016.
- The Louisville offense tallied double digit hits in two of three games to start the season, doing so in both victories. The Cards notched at least 10 hits 29 times in 2024, posting a 22-7 mark when doing so.
- Thirteen Cardinals made their Louisville debuts during the opening weekend, including six that made collegiate debuts.
PLAYER NOTES
- Zion Rose was a freshman All-American in 2024 after hitting .380, the top mark of any Power Five freshman during the regular season. He started the 2025 season by picking up right where he left off. Over three games in Arlington, Texas, Rose went 6-for-13 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored moving his career average up to .385.
- Patrick Forbes was dominant in his first outing as Louisville's Friday night starter. The junior struck out a career high 11 batters over five innings, allowing just a two-run home run for the only damage against him. Forbes' 11 strikeouts were tied for the ACC lead during the opening weekend.
- Peter Michael transferred to Louisville with a career 13.25 ERA after one year each at San Diego and Northwestern. However, the right-hander earned a spot in the rotation and was outstanding in his first start against No. 12 Arizona. Michael allowed a solo homer in the first inning and nothing else, limiting the Wildcats to just the one run and hit over 4.2 innings, doubling up the longest outing of his collegiate career.
- Lucas Moore garnered a pair of starts in centerfield during the opening weekend, picking up multiple hits in both contests. No hit was bigger than his second one against No. 7 Texas, a single with the bases loaded that gave the Cardinals a 4-3 walk-off win in 10 innings.
- Matt Klein has taken over the primary catching responsibilities in 2025 following a breakout summer in the Cape Cod League that saw him hit .375 for the Cotuit Kettleers. His hitting ways continued to start the spring, as he had a pair of multi-hit games in Texas capped by a 3-for-5 day against No. 12 Arizona with two RBIs and two runs scored.
