
No. 12/7 Cardinals Complete First Day at SMU Classic

The women are in first and the men are second after the first day of racing; Julia Dennis sets meet record in the 50 free.
DALLAS -- The University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving teams have completed the first day of competition at the SMU Classic in Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center. The No. 7-ranked UofL women are in first and the No. 12 UofL men are second.

The event features each team bringing eight swimmers and one diver. Each swimmer may swim a total of six events, but at least one of those must be a relay. Each team enters one swimmer per heat, and the team's best swimmer must be in the championship heat.

The UofL women won the 400 medley relay to start the meet with Julie Mishler (52.59), Caroline Larsen (49.94), Ella Welch (51.67) and Julia Dennis (46.85) put together the winning time of 3:31.05. The UofL men followed suit, winning their relay in 3:06.53 put up by Jackson Millard (46.69), Finnley Conklin (52.10), Rian Graham (45.67) and an anchor of 42.07 by Guy Brooks.

Kim Herkle won the 400 IM Finals with a 4:13.72 with Summer Cardwell putting up the fastest time in the consols with a 4:12.47. Gregg Enoch won the men's 400 IM with a time of 3:48.20 and Jackson Millard won his heat with a time of 3:48.25.

The Cards continued their winning ways when Daria Golovaty won the 200 free in 1:44.81 and Summer Cardwell won her heat in 1:45.60. Louisville's Guy Brooks won the men's 200 free with a time of 1:33.67 just edging Auburn's Daniel Krichevsky's 1:33.74. Cardinal freshman Oscar Isberg won his heat with a time of 1:36.37.

Julia Dennis kept the winning streak alive with a win in the 50 free, going 21.54 to set a meet record. Caroline Larsen had the second fastest time in the field, winning her heat in 22.08. LSU's Jere Hribar won the men's 50 free with ACC Freshman of the Week Nikita Sheremet hot on his heels with a 19.28 to touch second. Rian Graham went 20.04 for the Cards in the other heat.

Sammantha Helmboldt won the 3M diving with a score of 305.85 and UofL's Mack Malloy was fourth for the men in 1M diving with a mark of 312.55.

In the 100 butterfly, LSU's Sofia Sartori was into the wall first with a 51.89 with Caroline Larsen touching second for the Cards with a time of 52.06. Ella Welch won her heat with a time of 52.38. In the men's 100 fly, UofL's Rian Graham (46.76) was second to Auburn's Sohib Khaled's 46.68. Gregg Enoch was second in his heat, with a 47.69.

Louisville freshman Julie Mishler was second the 100 backstroke, turning in a 52.46. In the other heat, freshman Xeniya Ignatova clocked in at 54.69 to touch third in her heat. Â For the Cardinal men, Jackson Millard (46.80) battled LSU's Stepan's Goncharov, who turned in the winning time of 46.41. Oscar Isberg stopped the clock at 47.86 in his heat.

In the 100 breaststroke, Auburn's Kiia Metsakonkola had the fastest time with a 1:01.44. UofL's Kim Herkle's touched third with a 1:02.36. Ella Welch had the fastest time of the field with a 1:00.54. Finnley Conklin won the men's 100 breaststroke with a time of 52.67 and UofL teammate Jake Eccleston won his heat with a 53.77.

The Louisville women won the 800 free relay when the foursome of Summer Cardwell (1:45.73), Daria Golovaty (1:45.01), Xeniya Ignatova (1:47.32) and Julia Dennis (1:46.68) combined to post a 7:04.74. The Louisville men were fourth with a time of 6:25.12 put up by Guy Brooks (1:35.00), Gregg Enoch (1:36.72), Nikita Sheremet (1:38.45) and Oscar Isberg (1:34.95). Â

Divers will compete on 1- and 3-meter. Scoring will be as follows: Individual: 14-11-10-9-8-6-4-3-2-1 and Relays: 28-22-20-18-16.
