Cards Fall on the Road to Virginia Tech, 5-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Louisville women's soccer team had their first game after a 12-day break and ultimately fell to Virginia Tech 5-1 Thursday night at Thompson Field. The Cardinals fell behind in the first half by two goals and were unable to come from behind in the match.
The first half was quiet for both teams through the first 30 minutes until the Hokies broke through. Virginia Tech scored the first goal of the match off a corner kick in the 32nd minute. A loose ball in the box ended up on the foot of Taylor Price and she slotted it for the first goal of the match.
Virginia Tech added another goal in the 37th minute and it was Price's second of the match. She got to a through ball first and beat the keeper for a brace and put the Hokies up 2-0 going into the half.
In the second half, the Cardinals cut into the deficit in the first five minutes of play.
Mackenzie Geigle went on a run down the right side of the field and crossed the ball back towards the top of the box. Brooke Dardano settled the ball at the edge of the box and got a shot towards the right post and beat the keeper. It was her first goal of the season and cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
It did not take long for Virginia Tech to regain its two-goal lead. Anna Weir tallied a goal in the 54th minute to put the Hokies back up by two at 3-1 with over 35 minutes to play.
Virginia Tech added an insurance goal in the 57th minute to put the match out of reach for the Cards. The Hokies scored again in the 64th minute to increase the lead.
The Cards will head back to Louisville and get set for their first home game in three weeks. Louisville hosts NC State on Sunday, September 29 from Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cards and Wolfpack are set to face off at 1 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
