August 16, 2023 | Women's Soccer
This will be one of 10 home games this season at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team is ready to begin the 2023 campaign this Thursday when they take on Indiana State at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The season opener is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET start and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
Head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes is set to begin her 24th season at the helm of the women's soccer program at Louisville. She is the program's all-time winningest head coach with a record of 200-183-21. She tallied her 200th career win last season when the Cardinals defeated NC State 1-0 on the road on October 20th.
The Cardinals have 19 returners from last year's squad that went 6-8-2 overall. The Cards will welcome nine newcomers to the squad in five freshman and four college transfers. Of the five freshmen, two of them are coming from overseas with Viktoria Wik (Denmark) and Fiona Gaißer (Germany). Wik played with HB Køge and Gaißer played with Bayern Munich II last season before coming to the Cards.
The Cardinals were very successful during the non-conference portion of their schedule last season as they went 3-1-2 against non-conference foes. The Cardinals only allowed four goals in the six games and had clean sheets in three of the six.
Under head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, Louisville is 20-1-2 in season openers and 16-6-1 in home openers. The Cardinals have won 18 of the last 19 season openers, including each of their last six. Louisville has won 11-straight home openers and are 9-0 in home openers at Lynn Stadium, which opened in 2014.
The Cardinals have outscored opponents 46-14 in season-openers under Ferguson-Dayes. Since Lynn Stadium opened, Louisville have outscored their opponents 33-6 and five of the nine games have been shutouts. Last season, the Cardinals defeated UIC 3-0 in the season opener from Lynn Stadium. Karsyn Cherry scored her first goal after earning the start in her first collegiate game. Autumn Weeks also scored a goal in her first career game with the Cardinals.
