Cardinals Draw With Indiana State, 0-0
August 17, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Louisville did not allow a shot over the 90 minutes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the season with a scoreless 0-0 draw against Indiana State Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals held a 23-0 shot advantage over the Sycamores but could not break through on goal.
Over the first 45 minutes, neither team had many opportunities in the attacking third as the majority of possession was held in the midfield.
In the second half, the Cardinals upped the pressure offensively and had a number of chances to break through.
The first came in the 57th minute and it got started with a great ball from Savina Zamborini over to Addie Chester who was just outside the box. She turned to goal and put a shot with pace on net but the Sycamores' keeper was able to smother it and keep it from finding the back of the net.
In her first collegiate game, Fiona Gaißer had a couple of chances within minutes of each other to put the Cardinals ahead. In the 73rd minute, she controlled possession through the midfield and fired off a shot from distance that went just above the top bar of the goal.
A few moments later, Gaißer had the best opportunity the Cardinals had all game in the 77th minute. Also in her first collegiate game, Emma Kate Schroll had a great service just outside the six-yard box where Gaißer rose above her defender and placed a header on frame. The Sycamores' keeper dove to her right and just got a hand on the shot to push it away from danger and keep the score tied at 0-0.
The Cardinals continued to push forward in the final moments of the game as Chester and Zamborini had shots that reached goal but were unable to get it past the Indiana State keeper.
Louisville will be back in action this weekend as it hits the road for the first time in the 2023 season. The Cardinals will take a short drive up I-71 to Cincinnati as they take on Xavier on Sunday, August 20. Sunday's match will start at 7:30 p.m. from Corcoran Field and it will be streamed on FloFC, which requires a paid subscription to watch.
