Louisville Men Stand in 7th After First Night at NCAA Championships

Dalton Lowe sets 50 back record
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team stands in seventh place after the first day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

Arizona State took the early lead after Day 1 with 68 points, followed by NC State (66), California (62), Florida (60), Indiana (5), Texas (6) and Louisville (42).

In the 200 Medley Relay, the Cardinals were able to shave 1.16 off their entry time to finish in 1:22.43 posted by Dalton Lowe (20.56), Denis Petrashov (22.79), Abdelrahman El-Araby (20.28) and Michael Eastman (18.80). The Cardinals finished second in their heat and finished seventh overall, earning the foursome All-American Honors. Lowe's leadoff backstroke leg set a new school record to help the Cardinals outswim their seed, moving from 15th to seventh. The event was won by NC State's time of 1:20.67, which set a meet and NCAA Record.

In the 800 free relay, the eighth-seeded Cards finished eighth, posting a 6:12.25 put up by Murilo Sartori (1:32.50), Denis Loktev (1:33.07), Guy Brooks (1:33.34) and Michael Eastman's anchor of 1:33.34. The Texas relay team won in 6:03.42, setting a meet, NCAA and American record.

The championships started tonight with two relay races. The rest of the championships will have prelims each day at 10 a.m. CT with the finals scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
