UofL takes unbeaten record out for a spin
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Looking to build on back-to-back sweeps to start the season, the University of Louisville women's tennis team heads to Wichita, Kan. this weekend for a pair of dual matches against Wichita State and Iowa State. The first serve against Iowa State is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by a 10 a.m. start time against Wichita State on Sunday. Wichita Country Club will host all of this weekend's action.
Â
This marks the first road matches for the Cardinals, who are 2-0 after hosting Ball State and Miami (OH). The Cards secured the early advantage against both MAC opponents, winning the doubles point on the top two courts before sweeping all singles matchups. The doubles pair of Rhea Verma and Andrea Di Palma have dominated in the one-spot, winning 6-2 in each event. Head coach Mark Beckham is receiving contributions across the lineup, including from transfer Chelsea Sawyer. Sawyer has made swift work of her opponents at the No. 4 line, taking both of her singles matches in two sets.
Â
Wichita State is 2-0 on the season, last defeating Newman 6-1 in their home opener. The Shockers lineup is led by the No. 23 ranked doubles team of Marta Bellucco and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva. The senior duo has won both of their doubles action to open the schedule, besting Missouri State 6-3 and Newman 6-1.
Â
Iowa State is off to a hot start this spring. The Cyclones enter the weekend 4-0 overall, coming off a home doubleheader where they swept Colorado and North Dakota. Iowa State has won 26 out of the possible 28 points through the first four matches of the season. This marks the first-ever meeting between Iowa State and Louisville.
