2021-22: Sawyer played at No. 2 and No. 3 in singles for an 8-13 record, including a team-high five wins in conference play. She defeated then-No. 25 Carson Tanguilig of No. 1 North Carolina 6-1, 6-2 and won four straight singles matches from Feb. 19-Mar. 6. At the No.3 spot, Sawyer posted an 11-10 doubles record with partner Dina Chaika.
2020-21: After sitting out the 2019-20 season due to transfer rules, Sawyer posted an 11-8 singles record from the No.3 and No.4 position. She partnered with three other Cardinals – Raven Neely, Nikolina Jovic, and Dina Chaika – to post a combined 5-12 mark in double competition. Sawyer won four straight singles matches from Mar. 12-Mar. 26.
Previous School: She began her collegiate career as a Volunteer, playing her freshman year at the University of Tennessee. At UT, she went 12-4 in singles matches. In doubles, Sawyer competed in SEC regular season matches, SEC tournament matches and in the NCAA tournament. In the summer of 2018, Sawyer won her singles and doubles draws at the Oracle ITA Summer Circuit powered by UTR at Middle Tennessee State. She transferred to Penn State where she competed in 12 singles and 10 doubles matches over four tournaments in the fall of 2018. Sawyer’s singles play was highlighted at the Hokie Fall Invite where she rattled off three straight set wins to make the finals. In finals, she fell in a tight three-set match to Liberty’s Lara Soares, 6-0, 0-6, 7-5. In doubles, Sawyer paired up with Gabby O’Gorman to tie for a team-high five wins. In the spring, she went 13-6 predominately playing No. 3 for the Nittany Lions and had a ranked win over #62 Kolie Allen from Ohio State.
Prep: Chelsea Sawyer of Clemmons, N.C. was rated as a five-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, ranking as high as No. 27 in her recruiting class. She was the No. 43-ranked player in the country and the top player in the state of North Carolina and played on the Southern Cup Team. She won the singles title at the Cary Tennis Park Classic in N.C.
