LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a total team effort, six different Cardinals scored goals as the University of Louisville women's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a historic 8-1 rout of Wright State. The Cards' eight goals set a new program record for goals scored at Lynn Stadium.
Freshman Maisie Whitsett led the offense with two goals and two assists in her debut as a Cardinal. Emina Ekic also tallied two goals, while Nadege L'Esperance, Delaney Snyder, and Kennadi Carbin each recorded one goal and one assist.
"What a great response to giving up a goal, coming back and responding with eight goals," said UofL head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "I thought our speed of play was good. They're a good team, and I thought our speed of play was really good, which allowed us to keep them off the tempo and rhythm."
Wright State struck first as Erin Graefen sent a free kick into the goal, giving the Raiders a 1-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the first half. Louisville countered at the 20-minute mark when Ekic converted on a corner kick from L'Esperance, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Cards extended their lead to 2-1 in the 26th minute as Whitsett found the back of the net off of a cross by Carbin, notching her first goal as a Cardinal. Minutes later, Louisville took a 3-1 lead when Whitsett sent a cross into the box to Snyder who also notched her first career goal.
Louisville finished the first half with a 12-1 shot advantage and a 7-0 edge in corners. Ekic tallied three shots, followed by Brooklyn Rivers, Whitsett and Snyder with two apiece.
The Louisville offense came out blazing in the second half with four quick goals over the span of seven minutes. Carbin kick-started the run with a header off of a cross by Allison Whitfield to give the Cards a 4-1 lead 52 minutes into the match.
Less than two minutes later, Rivers sent a pass to L'Esperance who blasted a shot from 25 yards out past the Wright State keeper, stretching the Cards' lead to 5-1 and surpassing the previous record for the most goals scored at Lynn Stadium.
Seconds later, Ekic registered her second goal of the night on a 25 yard shot of her own to put the Cards up 6-1. Whitsett scored her second goal of the night off a cross by Snyder in the 58th minute, capping Louisville's scoring onslaught and giving the Cards a 7-1 advantage.
Taylor Kerwin scored the final goal of the match, sending Snyder's cross into the back of the net in the 69th minute and sealing the Cards' 8-1 victory over the Raiders.
The Cardinals edged the Raiders 24-3 in shots and 14-1 in corners. Lana Batson recorded her first career save, while Wright State's Maddie Jewell finished the night with six saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. when they welcome Xavier to Lynn Stadium.
