Cardinals Down Xavier 2-1 in Overtime

Freshman Maisie Whitsett scores the game-winner with eight seconds left in overtime
LOUISVILLE, Ky – Freshman Maisie Whitsett scored the game-winning goal in the final seconds of overtime to lift the University of Louisville women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Xavier on Sunday evening at Lynn Stadium. With the win, Louisville improves to 2-0 on the season.
"I think we battled, and I think we figured how we had to win the game," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "It wasn't necessarily pretty, but certainly I love the will to win and the fortitude, and what a great goal by Maisie. A weak side, late run with a cross from Allison Whitfield and what a header, what a header. Great job by her, and great goal by Delaney Snyder in the first half to get the equalizer. Again, not a game that was super pretty and super attractive, but it shows our toughness for sure."
After going scoreless for the majority of the first half, the Musketeers gained an early 1-0 edge over the Cardinals when a shot by Xavier deflected off of a Louisville defender and bounced into the goal at the 31-minute mark. Xavier's lead was short-lived as the Cardinals quickly responded with a goal from Delaney Snyder's on a throw-in from Nadege L'Esperance, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 34th minute.
The Cards used the momentum from Snyder's goal to apply offensive pressure for the remainder of the half but were unable to capitalize, remaining tied with the Musketeers heading into the locker room. Louisville finished with an 8-2 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corners.
Both defenses held tough coming out of the break with neither team getting a shot off for the opening 10 minutes of the half. In the 69th minute, a shot by L'Esperance kick-started three consecutive scoring opportunities, but the Cards could not convert.
Louisville's final opportunity of regulation came at the 88-minute mark, but Callie McKinney's shot sailed just high of the goal, sending the match into overtime with the score tied at 1-1.
Neither team could get anything going offensively for the majority of overtime until a shot by Brooklyn Rivers was halted by Xavier's keeper in the 97th minute. Against a strong Musketeers defense, the Cards were able to gain control in the final seconds. Allison Whitfield raced down the field to deliver a cross into the box to Whitsett, who headed a shot into the net with just eight seconds left on the clock to power the Cards to the 2-1 victory.
Louisville topped Xavier 16-4 in shots and 6-5 in corners. Gabby Kouzelos earned the win for the Cardinals, finishing the evening with one save. Xavier's Toni Bizzarro recorded three saves for the Musketeers.
Up next, the Cards will travel to Dayton, Ohio on Thursday to square off against the Flyers. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
