The Cardinals late surge was not enough to overcome a three goal deficit
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite a late game surge, the University of Louisville women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early three-goal deficit, falling 3-2 against Purdue on Friday night at Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals drop to 5-2 on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 5-1.
"We were out of sorts from the opening whistle" said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, "We chased the ball, we missed every tackle, we missed every pass, and I give 100 percent of the credit to Purdue."
The early minutes of the first half were quiet for both the Cardinals and the Boilermakers until Purdue scored two quick goals within the course of three minutes midway through the half.
Redshirt senior Maddy Williams scored the first goal of the match in the 25th minute, assisted by Andrea Petrina. Minutes later, the duo combined yet again to increase the Boilermakers' lead to 2-0.
In the 31st minute, Louisville was awarded a corner kick, their first of four within the span of two minutes. However, three huge saves and a block from Purdue kept the Cardinals from getting on the board to close out the half.
Just three minutes into the second half, Williams completed a hat trick with her third goal of the night, increasing the Boilermakers' lead to 3-0.
In the 86th minute Alison Price connected with Mollie Rouse to kick start an offensive surge for the Cardinals. Just three minutes later, a goal by Brooklyn Rivers, assisted by Gabrielle Vincent, brought the Cardinals within one. However, with only 24 seconds left in the match the Louisville was unable to score an equalizer, falling to Purdue 3-2.
Louisville finished the match with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 13-8 advantage in shots. Rouse led the Cardinals' offense, recording her first goal of the season and firing up three shots. In goal, Gabrielle Kouzelos finished with two saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, September 14 for a matchup against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. The final non-conference match of the season is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Lynn Stadium.
