Louisville has 24 players assigned to six different summer leagues around the nation
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Fresh off its fourth College World Series appearance in school history, including the third in the last five seasons, the University of Louisville baseball program turned its focus to the 2018 season Monday with the release of the team's summer baseball assignments.
The Cardinals have 24 underclassmen assigned to six different wooden bat leagues this summer, including eight in the Cape Cod League. That group will include lefty pitcher Nick Bennett, infielder Tyler Fitzgerald and righty Bryan Hoeing with the Bourne Braves, righty Sam Bordner with the Brewster Whitecaps, infielder Devin Mann and righthander Riley Thompson with the Orleans Firebirds, and outfielder Josh Stowers and lefty Adam Wolf with the Chatham Anglers.
Louisville will have five players assigned to the New England Collegiate League – righthander Austin Dickey (Keene Swamp Bats), third baseman Justin Lavey (Sanford Mainers), righthander Shay Smiddy (Newport Gulls), outfielder Ethan Stringer (Keene Swamp Bats) and infielder Logan Wyatt (Sanford Mainers). Four Cardinals will play in the Northwoods League this summer – righthander Matthew McCarty (Madison Mallards), catcher Zeke Pinkham (Rochester Honkers), infielder Jake Snider (Madison Mallards) and righty Hunter Sullivan (Rochester Honkers).
Additionally, lefty pitcher and outfielder Adam Elliott, righty Daniel Fischer, lefty J.D. Mundt and righty Mac Welsh will play for the Albany Dutchmen in the Perfect Game Collegiate League. Lefthander Rabon Martin and righty Phillip Sanderson will play for the Holly Springs Salamanders in the Coast Plain League and catcher Pat Rumoro will play for the Lombard Orioles in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League.
Following the completion of the collegiate summer season, Louisville players will return to campus for the fall semester in late August to continue preparations for 2018.
The Cardinals closed their record-setting 2017 season with a 53-12 mark overall after making the program's fourth College World Series appearance. Louisville set school record for victories in a season surpassing the previous record of 51 achieved in 2013 while also winning its opening game in Omaha for the first time in its four CWS berths. The 2017 season also included the program's third straight ACC Atlantic Division championship and its first ever National Player of the Year (Brendan McKay).
