ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Louisville enters the weekend at 6-1-1 overall after Tuesday's 1-0 win at Saint Louis and 2-0-0 in the ACC following last Friday's triumph over No. 1 Notre Dame. UofL, which returned eight players with 13 or more starts from last year's team, has been paced by junior Mohamed Thiaw's five goals this season, which includes three game-winners. Defensively, graduate student and Dartmouth transfer Stefan Cleveland has allowed only two goals in eight matches while registering six shutouts.
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS
Virginia enters Saturday's match at 3-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the ACC after a 3-3 draw against No. 6 Clemson last Saturday. The Cavaliers are guided by head coach George Gelnovatch, the father of Louisville freshman goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch. Last season, UVA was 10-5-3 overall and second in the ACC Coastal at 4-2-2 before advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
SERIES SNAPSHOT
Saturday marks just the third meeting all-time between Louisville and Virginia, which split the first two contests. The Cardinals dropped a 3-2 decision against the Cavaliers last season in Charlottesville, while this will be Virginia's first visit to Louisville.
A LOOK BACK: LAST OUTING FOR LOUISVILLE
A first half goal by Mohamed Thiaw proved to be enough as 13th-ranked Louisville registered its fourth straight shutout with a 1-0 road win over Saint Louis on Tuesday night at Hermann Stadium. Thiaw scored for the third time in the last four matches, while graduate goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland turned away a season-high four shots as the Cardinals extended their longest winning streak since a four-match stretch in September 2014. The four consecutive shutouts are the most for Louisville since setting a school record with five straight shutouts in 2013. Louisville finished Tuesday's match with an 11-8 advantage in shots marking the seventh time in eight matches this season they have out-shot an opponent.
LOUISVILLE IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
Entering the weekend, the Cardinals ranked second in the NCAA in goals against average (0.24), third in save percentage (0.905) and fifth in shutout percentage (0.75). Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland is second in the nation in both GAA (0.242) and save percentage (0.900), while forward Mohamed Thiaw is third nationally with three game-winning goals.
NINE RANKED FOES ON CARDINALS SCHEDULE
Louisville is 2-1-0 against ranked foes this season with wins over No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 14 UConn. The Cardinals have five teams remaining on their schedule ranked in this week's NSCAA poll. That slate features No. 2 Syracuse, No. 4 Indiana, No. 7 Clemson, No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 16 Virginia. Additionally, Boston College is just outside the top 25 (26th), while Butler has moved to 10th since drawing with the Cardinals.
