Louisville Baseball Weekend Scrimmage Review

Sophomore Will Smith had five hits in the Cardinals' two scrimmages last weekend.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville baseball team concluded the second week of fall workouts last weekend with a pair of scrimmages at Jim Patterson Stadium.
In Friday's weekend opener, the offense led the way as the Red team earned a 14-10 victory over the Black squad. Senior infielder Sutton Whiting led the way in the win going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI, while senior infielder Zach Lucas added two hits and two RBI. For the Black squad, sophomore catcher Will Smith was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while freshman Austin Clemons was 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI. On the mound on Friday, junior righty Anthony Kidston had five strikeouts in three strong innings of work in the starting role.
During Sunday's scrimmage, the Black team edged out a 6-5 victory over the Red as sophomore outfielder Corey Ray was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. For the Red team, Smith was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. On the mound, freshman righty Lincoln Henzman had three strikeouts in two innings of shutout work, while sophomore righty Zack Burdi struck out two in an inning of relief for his second save of the weekend. Freshman righty Sean Leland had three innings of scoreless work with two strikeouts for the Red team.
Through the first three fall scrimmages, Smith has paced the offense hitting .545 with a double, two triples and five RBI, while Lucas is hitting .556 with two runs driven in. Additionally, Whiting has a .333 average with a double, a triple and two RBI, sophomore Nick Solak has four RBI while hitting .308 and Ray has driven in three with a .308 average.
Louisville plans to host weekend scrimmages each week until the conclusion of fall workouts in mid-October. Dates and times for future scrimmages as well as the annual Pizza Bowl series will be announced throughout the fall.

Louisville returns 19 letterwinners from its 2014 squad, which finished 50-17 overall, won the program's fifth regular season conference championship in six seasons and hosted NCAA postseason games for the second straight year. The Cardinals defeated Kennesaw State in the Louisville Super Regional to clinch their third CWS berth in eight seasons under the guidance of head coach Dan McDonnell. Louisville, which has hosted six different rounds of NCAA postseason baseball in the last eight years, ended the season ranked as highly as sixth in the national polls.
Leading the list of returnees for Louisville in the 2015 season is junior righthanded pitcher Kyle Funkhouser, a Second Team All-American in 2014 who set a school record for wins finishing 13-3 overall with a 1.94 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 120.1 innings. The Cardinals also return senior infielder and 2014 All-Conference honoree Zach Lucas, talented starting pitchers Anthony Kidston (junior righty) and Josh Rogers (sophomore lefty).
In his eight seasons guiding the Louisville baseball program, McDonnell has placed the Cardinals among the nation's elite with the three College World Series berths, four NCAA Super Regional appearances, seven NCAA Regional bids, five conference regular season titles, two conference tournament titles, 14 All-Americans and 359 wins overall (seventh most nationally during that eight-year span).
