LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Cody Ege's RBI triple in the eighth inning lifted Arnold's Attack to a 3-1 comeback win over Xan's Zephyrs in game four of the Louisville baseball team's 2010 Pizza Bowl series on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
With the win, the Attack evened the best-of-five series at two games each setting up a decisive fifth and final game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. The annual intra-squad series closes out the Cardinals' fall workouts.
With the game tied at 1-1, Ege (Cherokee, Iowa/Washington HS) sent a Curtis McCombs (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) offering into right center field to score senior Drew Haynes (New Albany, Ind./New Albany HS) from first for the game-winner. Ege scored moments later from third on an RBI single to right by sophomore Kyle Grieshaber (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette HS) for the final two-run margin. Overall, Ege was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Grieshaber was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the eight-inning game.
On the mound, freshman righty Chad Green (Effingham, Ill./Effingham HS) came out of the bullpen for three innings of shutout relief with three strikeouts to earn the win. He followed sophomore righty Justin Amlung (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier HS), who allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work in the starting role.
For the Zephyrs, senior catcher J.J. Ethel (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale CC) and freshman Ty Young (Coatesville, Pa./Malvern Prep School) led the way with two hits each, while freshman Cole Sturgeon (Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro Catholic HS) had a hit and an RBI. On the mound, senior righty Gabriel Shaw (Paducah, Ky./St. Mary's HS) was outstanding as the Zephyrs' starter pitching five perfect innings with one strikeout. Junior righty Tony Zych (Monee, Ill./St. Rita HS) pitched two innings of shutout relief before giving way to McCombs, who took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in less than an inning of relief.
Former Louisville catcher Jeff Arnold is coaching the Attack, while Cardinals' volunteer assistant coach Xan Barksdale is leading the Zephyrs in the Pizza Bowl series.
