LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After waiting out a two-hour and 21 minute rain delay, the University of Louisville were defeated 13-4 by St. John's in the opener of a three-game BIG EAST weekend series late Friday night.
The Red Storm (21-5, 6-1 BIG EAST) took a 4-0 lead on the Cardinals in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Cardinal errors to plate four unearned runs.
Louisville (15-11, 3-4 BIG EAST) picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning when Andrew Clark doubled, moved to third on an errant pick-off attempt and scored on an RBI single by DH Jeff Arnold.
The Red Storm piled on four more in the sixth, netting consecutive two-out RBI doubles from Paul Karmas and Greg Hopkins for an 8-1 lead.
Clark was hit by a pitch to open the seventh and moved to third on a hit and run single by Derrick Alfonso. A wild pitch scored a run and later, Drew Haynes' RBI groundout plated another to cut the lead to 8-3.
In the UofL eighth Josh Richmond drew a leadoff walk, Chris Dominguez was hit by a pitch, as was Clark to load the bases. Alfonso drew a walk to push across a run and bring the tying run to the plate, but Stewart Ijames grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
A five-run ninth sealed the game for the Red Storm. Daniel Bennedetti hit a two-run single and Chris Anninos followed with a two-run home run that snuck over the fence down the right field line.
Louisville starter Zack Pitts (4-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs, four of which were earned on seven hits and three walks, while equalling a career-high with nine strikeouts.
Neil Holland went a season-long 2.2 innings, giving up a run on two hits and a pair of walks, fanning one. Matt Lea was touched for four runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.
St. John's starter Scott Barnes improved to 4-1 with the win, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks, also striking out nine in 6.1IP.
Nick Cenatiempo allowed a run on three walks, striking out two in an inning and two-thirds. Luis Monell gave up a hit to pinch-hitter Greg Del George, striking out three in the ninth.
The Cards managed just four hits on the evening.
